Not really, the big v8s don't tend to be very efficient. The motor in the Honda AP1 S2000 was putting 237hp from a 2 liter engine. The strength of the V8 is in the ability to get more from mods. There is no replacement for displacement so ultimately the bigger the motor the more it can be built to put out simply because there is more room to shove in more air and fuel.
Things like Nitorus and turbos are effective dispalcement increasers by getting more air/air molecules into the engine so more ful can be combusted.
Technology also plays a role, a stock 80's era V8 is an anemic twit, compared to some of the 4 and 6 cyl engines out there today. Even modern V8's are given a run for thier money by the newest crop of 4 and 6's out there. The 370z for exmaple puts down 332hp from a 3.7l engine. The Dodge caliber SRT-4 puts out 285hp. The stock GT falls in the middle at 300hp.
V8's also tended to be better at torgue, but even that gap is narrowing.
