Default Pony got some respect from a ricer

Hey all, haven't been on in a while. Too busy with job and ladyfriend to post, but anyways.

Couple days ago I'm taking my usual 15 mile drive into Lompoc, nice clear afternoon, no traffic, when out of no where this little 80's civic hatchback shows up on my tail. He falls behind after the first hill then catches right back up to me. Long story short I end up next to him at a stop light a few miles down the road. The guy revs and both he and his friend laugh, I thought they were dogging on my car until the passenger calls out "What year's you car man? Its nice, sounds great." I told him. he shouts out, "wanna go?" "aww, sure what the heck." We take off he gets some tire spin, I lauch easy and proceed to smoke em by about 8 car lengths. I could see their grins in my mirror as they made a left turn.

I think some people just want to see our cars go, and know they have no chance of winning. Still a good kill. The show of respect was nice too.

Arrow Real respect

i once saw a grand national and a mustang at the light together. I was at the time driving the buick t-type and had already been dusted off by the grand national, anyway they both rev and the grand national just left the stang the way he left me in all fairness my brother was driving but that thing moved out so well i don't think he would have beat me as bad but i know i still would have lost and i am a good racer i don't waste time spining out and burning rubber. Still i was surprised by the outcome. I know the mustang v6 or v8 can't beat my z out of the hole because it's so quick but losing to a honda is just sad.

Most people don't have fast cars. That being said, unless its modded its not that impressive by modern standards, its glory is what it was able to do then, not now. Now a days you have NA V6's putting out better numbers than the 87 GN's supercharged and intercooled motor.

Like the OP's 5.0 ragtop, or my 88 300zx you respect the old cars for what they were working with then. Its almsot like a weird time warp. 1990 seemed to break the dam that had held back automotive technology since the mid 70's. In 1988 the 205hp my car came with from the factory was the cats meow for imports. In the 90's 300hp was the norm for the 300zx and 275+ for the LT1 and 2jz7. Ford lagged in the standard performance models.

Agreed. But it doesn't take much to make an fox run with a lot of the new and newer cars.

Very true, but what we have to mod for, people now buy out of the box. You really see how badly chained to the floor our cars were with the technology of the era when you look at the boosted 4 bangers running around making more power than an 80's vette.

Not sure what an 80's fox body needs- headers, cams, exhaust, UD pulley and bigger carb? The 300zx needs an intercooler, bigger injectors, boost controller and high pressure fuel pump to unlock it self from the floor.

H/C/I and exhaust is all you need to really romp. Gears help a lot too.
