Thanks for the kudos.
Yeah, his car certainly acted like it was bone stock(excluding the bling factor). Unless it has performance mods and a manual
tranny, and he punched it in 5th gear.
However, I gotta respectfully disagree with your assertion that 3.31's are always better than 3.55's for highway races.
For instance, let's dissect my race today, which started at 70 mph.
That put my engine's rpm at its max torque rating(4300 rpm) in 3rd gear with my 3.55 gears and 17" stock Pirelli's. If we assume his car had 3.31 gears, manual
tranny, and his tires were the same diameter as mine, then his engine would have been slightly below max torque(approx. 4000 rpm). Thus, my engine's slightly higher torque output alone would have given my car slightly greater acceleration at the start of the race.
But of far greater importance, my 3.55's would have accelerated my car much faster throughout the entire race(topped out at 110 mph) by enabling my engine to rev to redline quicker than his engine due to the higher MA(mechanical advantage) of my 3.55's.
Of course, the above also assumes that other less critical factors which affect a car's acceleration, such as air and tire rolling resistance, were identical. However, lowering his car may have reduced his car's air drag, while his wider tires definitely increased it.
On the other hand, things may have ended differently if the above assumptions were true, and the race had continued past 130 mph.
