It's funny to hear people act like a BMW or Benz is a joke and people (yuppies) only like them cause they cost so much(read: way too much). Some people like trucks, some like hot rods, some like luxury, that's why there are so many models out there. Mustang is not the only FINE auto on the road. Yeah the low end models might as well be called what they are --econo models, but a 745i, is a MACHINE and a pleasure to drive or ride in, same with the S class, these cars are not made to race, they are made to navigate in comfort, but they also have massive power on tap. Like everyone said, it depends on the model, and while I haven't seen a head up race, just from riding and driving... a 525 is gonna take a V6 Stang & 7 will take a stock pre-05 GT (I can't say with the 05's), and M's try it if your got mods, other wise, save the gas. I'll always have a Stang in the garage, but if I was choosing which car I'd rather cruise 600 highway miles in, at a STEADY 140MPH --BMW gets my butt cheeks every time LOL
indeed some of those Beemers are schweet cars, and they've got plenty on tap too... I was driving down to LA this weekend and on I-5 before the traffic got heavy, the speed of traffic was like 80-90 and there was a particular 745i that definitely was going from 70 to 90 with no problem whatsoever.
that said, if I'm gonna go 600 highway miles, gimme a Stang :-) Good luck with cruising at 140, though... heh.

stock... unless a small Red Sox sticker on the corner of the back window counts as a mod!

Run from a stoplight... your average German car is geared for autobahn running. M's and AMGs will pretty much **** us each way from sideways... unless you match a '99 GT up with a pre-2001 M3, then you have a race(stock for stock, obviously). Watch out for Dinan stickers on Bimmers, it could be anything from just a bodykit, to forced induction and everything in between.
And it's not all for status, some people just don't feel like they have anything to prove to another guy in a Mustang... mind you, I will be the first one to try and run every Bimmer I meet, I sure didn't buy the Stang for the luxurious interioror superb build quality.

yea someone down the street from me has a Dinan 5-series (I forget which one exactly)... I should take a close look at it sometime; it looks like a schweet car.
But hey, for $11K, I don't think I could've done much better than a year and a half old v6 Mustang! Bright red, no less ;-)

Could have bought a year old GT with 4K miles for 16... Unfortunately I did get stuck with black/black leather.

16 was out of my price range... I had originally thought about spending 8K, but then I saw the one I ended up buying and was like "I must have this one!!"
also, I wanted a six for convenience reasons... basically since I was moving to SF, I knew I would've died on a stick shift driving in the city, and a GT automatic didn't seem correct.
I totally think my next car is gonna be a Cobra. I think I can get a '04 Cobra in mid-06 for under $20K.

A friend of mine has a couple year old M3. What a sweet ride. It would absolutely, with no question, blow my '02 GT into the ditch.
Of course it cost twice as much, so it should.
It handles like a wet dream and has power-on-tap at nearly any RPM. It's 6 cylinder feels like a V8.
We trade cars once in a while, and we both appreciate the differences. As much as I like the BMW, I like my Mustang better even though it's not as fast. The Mustang is a rougher, more seat-of-the-pants type of driving, with gobs of tire smoking rear-wheel torque and sweet exhaust note. The Bimmer is refined and well-behaved but goes like a scared cat.
Different strokes for different folks -- it's all good.

M3's and M5s are the only BMW that can outrun a mustang, where the mustang and BMW are both stock. the e36 M3 (95-99) will start walking on a mustang around 100 mph, otherwise the mustang will be out in front. The new M3's get 0-60 in something like 5 seconds, so those will keep up, then just zoom by. youll have no problem taking any other model, others are either weak, or too heavy. just dont race any bmw in the twisties, theyll be gone before you know it.
Okay in my opinion you have to look at what each one is designed to do. Now yes a BMW is a bit more expensive than a mustang, however a BMW is geared for top speed cruising, in such cases as the autobahn so from a running start (both cars stock) it would be logical to think that the BMW would win. And BMW are not just luxury cars, they have based the majority of their engines from their track models. I am currently a new mustang owner 91 GT that is going to be powered up and i love it, nothing compares to a V8 sound. I have also owned a 95 M3, and a 96 V8 Mustang, the M3 was much quicker and faster overall. Once again from a rolling start (45-60mph) with both stock models of the BMW M3 would have one simply through the enineering put into the car for top speeds.
Euro's are over rated and because of it, they are over priced.
I have never run across a BMW that has out run me. They may exist, but....They are cruising cars and their owners don't push them hard. In my opinion, Euro car owners think they are on a higher level.
Really, it is like Apples vs. Oranges. Which one can you toss further? Doesn't matter, it's how they taste.
I get rather tired of people worshiping Euro cars. Most of us would get rather bored in one. Not that they are bad cars, just over rated and over priced. If they were priced at what they are worth, then I might have more respect for them. Give me the same amount of money and I will give you a Mustang that will out perform a Euro car every time.

I was on the freeway the other day. I think it's an M5 series or something. Cant really tell, but that sucker was going really fast. He was racing a pocket rocket bike and guessing how fast he blew by me, he must have been in the triple digits. I was going 75 and he just flew by like i was standing still.
Since I live in Germany I think I'll voice my opinion. You know what's funny is the BMW/Mercedes station wagons over here are very fast...it's a riot to see a family car with kids and a dog hauling ass pass you as if you were standing still. Being over here you also get encounters with exotic cars like Ferrari, Lambo, etc....all I can say it's fun being over here and running with these folks. I love kicking the crap out of the German kids that "Euro" tune their cars, Golfs, Opels, old bimmers,...they don't stand a chance.
I second this. BMW makes a beautiful vehicle. If your looking for the best combination of performance, comfort, and safety, in one package, the BMW is it. I've seen a 540 flip at over 100 mph, and the occupants walked away! But being a former BMW Technician, BMW stands for one other thing. "BRING MY WALLET"!! Which is what you'll be doing after the car is about 4 years old, or has over 50K miles on it. And as for mods, to get 150 hp with a DINAN setup on a E46 M3, your looking at 6K easy. So you can easliy modify a Mustang for less. You can get a Whipple superchager for the 05 Mustang for 6K that will give you close to 475hp and 500ft lb of torque!! Plus chances are the Mustang wont make your driveway look the the Exxon Valdeez was there!!!!

I can't say I agree with everything, but it well written. I am not a huge fan of BMW's myself and if I had to pick a euro car, it would be mercedes. Both cars have a value. And that is interior build quality. They don't rattle, have better sound resistance, and nicer electronics. But on a performance and looks level, they are just to expensive for what they are. You are buying status.
I just bought a 2005 Mustang GT before even seeing one in person. Now that is Trust!

I can speak from experience that a 2004 530i isn't a slouch (I drive one almost everyday), but they won't outrun a Mustang. It's rated at 225/255 I do believe, and I can outrun all my buddies cars with it...well, except for the nitrous assisted Mustang. It eats V6 Stangs, GT V6 Tiburons, Neons, etc. all day long.
