So I was cruising around in my '95 Chrystler (Which I use soley for cruising around in- it's got some 'get-up-and-go' to it, but lamentably it's an automatic, thus the cruisin') the other night, when some rich kids pull up next to me in a lifted red Chevy truck. Quad cab, 4x4, obviously not theirs per se, but still a decent truck.
My buddy and I had just pulled out of the only gas station we know that would sell us beer, when these kids get in the next lane. My windows are down and Tiger Army's playing as loud as the stock speakers in this luxurious POS would go. We're sitting at the light on one of the streets in town that runs parallel to the freeway (read: straight stretches of road with lights positioned about 1/2 mile apart). As it turns green, I jump off the line. The kids in the truck catch up, and at the next light yell to the driver's side, "Hey, you guys wanna race?"
"You serious?" is the best thing I could manage to yell out.
"Yeah. What? You not up to it?" shout the preppy high school kids from the truck.
My buddy looks over, then at the light, and says something along the lines of, "**** it, race 'em." It was obvious he didn't like the kids much, either.
So the light turns green, and my 1.8 liter engine jumps off the line. I never really put my foot down, because halfway down the street, some little Honda pulled in front of me, and instead of swerving and speeding up (the Visalia police substation was right next to the passing lane, and I didn't need to give the cops an excuse to search the vehicle), I let the truck pass. As the kids pulled up to the Honda (with a few OTs riding inside), they must've said the same thing, because the last thing I saw before turning was the Honda pulling out and smoking that Chevy truck.
And I'll always have more respect for rice rockets than Chevys.

Okay, coupla issues. First off, where I'm from, the guys are SO NOT "rich" or "preppy high school kids". They simply spend what little extra they have on truck 'stuff'. And they do a LOT of trading around amongst each other. Almost all of my boyfriend's brother's friends (20 and younger) drive VERY nice 4x4 trucks. Some deisel and some gas trucks. These guys WORK for what they have. Daddys are mostly farmers or every day, average Joe blue-collar workers.
No soap box, but what the heck are ya doing buying alcohol if you're underage?!
like u didnt or drink alcohol when you were underage!!!
Okay, well, yeah, but we didn't drive around with it in the car with us! And now I can at least say I grew up enough to know better!! (and had a friend who spent 10 days IN jail for underage drinking).
Thats Stupid... Then you wonder why its hard for people to find jobs with US companies
There is no need to wonder, American cars are for the most part under powered $hit with no style, to put it nicely. Tell all your American friends that are out of work to move up here to Indiana and work for Toyota. They will make more money than UAW members building American cars, and they won't have to worry about their jobs being shipped to Canada or Mexico like they would working for Ford or GM. Plus, there's no worry about them going belly up in near future.
And I have to agree, Chevy sucks. And in my opinion should die a long, hard, painful, grizzly death in flames.
In high school I had an 88' Chevy S-10, not even close to "VERY nice", but a truck nonetheless. I then upgraded to a 95' Nissan 4x4, that was a nice truck. All this while I was still in high school! It did however take all the money Walmart would pay me for pushing carts .
Dude I had an 1983 Oldsamobile Cutlass Ciera 1.9L - That was a big piece of $hit. 0 - 60 in five minutes. senior year got the car, man this car sucked!

Isn't Toyota and pretty much all of those companies fully American now anyways? I understood that Ford owned Mazda, Chrysler owns Mitsubuishi, Chevy... not sure. Im not saying that I know this, I just know they are affiliated somewhat now. As for the chevy topic, I own a mustang and love it when its running right, but I have to say Chevy makes a lot more sense than ford does. Almost all their parts are interchangeable and the '02 camaros and trans ams were 13 sec cars stock. I like Ford, but I dont like making excuses for it neither, but whatever floats it.
First: To thegillmachine.
" And I'll always have more respect for rice rockets than Chevys."
I can understand not having a problem with JAPANESE cars in general. However, myself and from what I gather, a lot of others on this forum take issue with riced out cars, ricer mentality and ricer culture. I'm no fan of GM, but I'd rather be seen driving a Sunfire than a honged-out fast-and-furious Nissan.
Second: To KyleF.
"Then you wonder why its hard for people to find jobs with US companies."
By and large, people are right. Most american cars are poorly made, badly engineered, suffer from chronic quality control issues, and are generally a poor choice. The notable exceptions are Pickups and flagship cars. The quality and power of a Mustang is the exception, not the rule when it comes to american cars. That's why the big 3 are in so much financial trouble right now. They're building too many sh!tty products.
I'm not anti-american or anything like that, you only need to look at the companies' financial reports to see the facts. It's hard for people to find jobs with big companies that are losing money. Not only is it tough on that company's employees, but also for that company's suppliers and ancillary producers.
However, that being said... when these companies decide to pull out the stops and do something right, it's usually stellar. One thing america does not f$ck with is horsepower.

Boyfriend's brother just traded his Ford Powerstroke for a Chevy Duramax. Made more sense cost-wise and parts-wise. Much cheaper on parts, modifications, etc and much easier to work on.
I'm a Ford fanatic (I've always owned Ford except for a a 90 Celica GT that was given to me - it ended up being the down payment for the Mustang). However, if Ford wasn't around , it would be a Dodge, then maybe a GM product. Not sure I could ever actually own a Japanese car. Although as stated, that's a matter for debate considering how many of those cars are now made in the U.S. (I live near Marysville and Honda employs a LOT of people in this area); and how many American cars' parts are now made overseas.....
more respect for ricers than chevys?...hmmm..well..whatever...i guess thats par for the course when you drive a 1976 stang...would that be 105hp or 140hp?
I don't have anything against chevy, most of the time I am working on the mustang I tend to cuss Ford wondering why they would put certain parts so hard to get to. I guess that goes both ways though. It sure makes me feel better at the time. Gillmachine, all of GM's sports cars come out stronger than Ford's stock, why not respect them? I wish Ford would have competed better with the other sports cars but they never really did, maybe in the late 60s and early 70s with the Boss 429s and 428s but thats really about it. I always hated in the late 90s when the GT had 260rwhp and Z28s were pushing 300(and over it in certain years). Then they came out with the Mach with 305hp only after GM had like 345hp out of the Trans Ams/SS. Anyways its whatever you like I guess. Also I am not sure about the Duramax diesels. They had so many problems with them and some still exist. One of the problems I know of is their injectors, they tend to go out relatively soon, happened to my uncle during a long trip they all stuck open. They also had trouble with that motor melting their heads in their early years, but most people swear by them now though. I think the GM just got a contract with CAT to put their diesels in them instead of that Izuzu or whatever they were using.

Well, I would DIE before driving GM again.
Seriously.
I HATE them.
Give me rice anyday over ANY GM.
As I've said before, If you gave me the most loaded Z06, I'd be insulted. I would call a flatbed to haul it to the closest Ford dealership to trade it in on a F150, and a Focus.
