i have a 91 5.0 with most of the basic bolt-ons and this weekend my friend came down to Fresno to visit.. yup this is when it all started.......
He's the owner of a SWEET 05 triple black GT convertable.......Very nice pony! well he has basically nothing other than some 20" wheel.ss.......bone stock!!
well, we being mustang guys of course the whole weekend we're doing a bit of,, ahhhh what would you call it "talking trash" when we finally decide to put the up on the line......Me in a 91 5.0 with a rebuilt stock block,,upper and lower edelbrock intakes..70mm bbk thro-b ,h-pipe, flowies, 3.55 at the rear,,,underdrive pullys, electric fan, bbk equal headers, and new clutch......heads down, is all bone stock.....
well, im a bit nervous, thinking :**** im about to get smoked like a cigar..............."""!!!!! anyway i had about 2-3 beers,,,,,,so im still sober...NOT Drunk...but with a bit of Man-ly confidence......You guys know what im talking about.......anyway we pull off.....RED light...........i hear him turn up his sterio.......I turn mine down....palms are sweating at this time...........Well Green light .........So we're off,,,, i gun it and so does he.. side by side....off of first gear, side by side......once i snapped my second in i started pulling away........woooooo.im stoked at this time.....IM at WOT first,second, third gears......all in smooth.......look back...im like dam...about threee cars ahead...............im like what the f.....k.............what just happen....so we pull over........
my buddys like dam your fast!......So i guess you can say I WON???
Well guys....im a smart guy.......so i was thinking...either my friend doesnt know how to drive?? OR his wheels are too heavy???? what do you guys think.??

what kind of rebuilt block do you have? man i heard the verts were slower but damn.... 3 car lengths? great win...sucks for him tho

20's slow you down quite a bit, my 1/4 mile times are .5 seconds slower with my heavy 20's. i've raced older fox bodies from a dig, he had gears and mods similar to yours and he actually got me from the dig, i ended ded up passin him at about 80 mph.

The wheels did slow him down but not enough to keep up with you. With your mods you should be mid 13's, he will probably be in the 14's with the wheels and it being a convertible. Don't race them too far though.

I'm pretty sure you would have had him beat with the weight issue. Verts are known to be heavier, that and his large rims didn't help the issue. With his being stock, without any sort of aftermarket tune, you had him beat, hands down.
He probably doesn't know his car that well, because 3 lengths seems a bit large of a gap.

Both cars have 3:55 gears so that is a wash....While 3:55's probably aren't the best gear for drage racing (4:10's or 4:30's) I wouldn't say they are bad. I think 5.0's make power lower in the lower rpm range so you'd probably get the jump on him everytime, but up top he probably would have had you...but shoulda woulda coulda...... you won!!!! Nice run.
I think the new stangs weigh somewhere around 3,500-3,600lbs....and add 100lbs for the vert.
