Last night coming home from a beer run...I'd just turned right onto a 3-lane w/ no cars. I made the turn pretty hard and swung wide into the left lane so I guess it peaked the interest of this black GTO that was sitting at that light.
I saw the lights coming up quick while I held at about 60. GTO catches up (black, clean, nice) throws a rev so I grab 3rd and we hit it. I pulled even and stayed there through 4th, but by then the GTO was pulling ahead. Take 2 - we slow down to about 30. I'm in 2nd now and he's able to get 1st (auto). I 3-beep, get a legit jump and hold it again till about the top of 4th where he's reeling me in but there's a red light (which is the entrance to my neighborhood - I was already planning on not pulling in). I get on the brakes hard and stop. Mr. GTO flies right thru it!
At the time I just thought that was kind of crazy. Then this morning (you know how you think about all kinds of stuff in the shower?) I thought what if there'd been a car going thru that intersection. The GTO was doing probably near 100 when he went through. It would have definitely killed anyone on the driver side and probably anyone on the passenger side - front and back. Would I have been "at fault" well that's debatable. Legally, I probably would have faced some sort of charges. Morally, I think I would have been devastated by the guilt of having participated.
Anyway, the GTO was supposively stock. I've got a JLT, SCT, 4.10's. It was pretty much a dead even pulling match up to about 90 then the GTO starts to pull. He had a passenger which I estimated to be about 200 lbs and was an auto like I said. So it's going to take a few more bolt ons to hang a single driver M6 from a roll. Once the GTO is modded though I have no idea.
Just my .02 - The key to being safe is to be situationally aware at all times and remain inside your control envelope.
Reading this story and seeing nghtrnnr's sideways truck just reinforced that point. Along with the fact that a cousin of mine had an accident Saturday night. He was speeding (40+ over) in his new BMW, passing a car on a narrow, two-lane road. He saw oncoming traffic too late and overcompensated getting back to his lane. Went into the ditch and flipped into a big oak tree roof-first. Him and the passenger were DOA.
Be safe when you speed. Know your limits, set the rules for yourself appropriately, and then don't break them.

My reason for posting my afterthoughts were mainly to explain a situation I never saw coming - having thought I'd covered all the angles about trying to do this stuff safely. "What if the other guy f***'s up or does something stupid?" I can think of a million reasons not to street race but for some reason, in the heat of the moment, none of that registers.

interestin....welcome to my world....but i do appreciate a guy big enough to admit something like this after rippin streetracin....its an addiction isnt it
You would be an accessory. That's the bad part about racing on the street, you never know when the guy in the other car is gonna do something really stupid.
When I was in highschool, a guy in the next grade had a '75-'77 camaro. He was racing a guy from the next town over, who was driving a '77 or '78 firebird. This was out in the country, where there are just long straight two-laners, with intersections every mile - surrounded by farms. The two cars approached a stop sign, and the kid from my school stopped. The guy in the firebird (his nickname was Dopey) didn't. He T-boned a chevette, and killed both occupants. Of course he lived (as did the other two passengers in his car).

A guy over where I life had a yellow GTO and hit a curb while racing, went across the apposing lane of traffic and went right into a house. Parked his car right in there living room. Another guy drove into the PD so I guess they are everywhere.
Good job with the GTO too btw, only one I ever ran made me look like I was in a geo.

My personal rule is to never, ever race "at speed" through an intersection. Someone could also turn into the lane and get rear ended when you have a green light due to seriously misjudging the closing speed.
So always back down well before the next light. Just my $.02
Oh, although GTOs are heavy, interesting race - good thing you have gears.
i think GTOs aren't that damn fast, they're fast, but not that fast.A friend of mine raced me from the hole with his 5.7 and I pulled 3 cars on him...4th gear..while boosting 13 psi.My car wheel hops on 1st and 2nd gear like crazy...I managed to pull half a car on a 6.0 last week, we went from 2nd at 45, from the hole he woul've kicked my ass

Weight and TM kills them. Fast but not the fast is about right. Same with the C6, fast but not that fast. For them, it's the TM that hurts performance. GM should have just put the LS6 in the C6 and GTO.

u got a good point there.....if i had to pick either gtos or 'stangs i would go for the ponies, you can get a lot more performance out of a ponie...but gtos are still fast

At one of the tracks I race at....GTO's are normally in the 8.5-8.6 range (1/8mile). I also raced a friend of mine that has a brand new C6 and he turned an 8.1 at 90mph on his stock street tires---not bad for the 1/8 mile, but no match for my usual 7.4X's....

You're racing at Irwindale I take it? I heard that track was the best 1/8th in So Cal. Also heard folks got the best times due to track prep, weather, etc. Unfortunetly, I never ran there....always at Barona (decent track) but at altitdue with a high DA and Qualcom..horrible 1/8th mile track. Ran at Fontana as well (1/4 mile) and it was a horrible track as well......the finish line was 50' higher than the start...an unphill track!!
That 8.1 is quick for a C6, if stock. Times posted from the east coast show stock C6's from a best of 8.2-8.6. Without the TM, his times might be a little better. The C6 isn't a great 1/8th mile racer anyway, the LS2 doesn't really come into its own until 3rd gear, especially with stock gearing. Regardless, your 7.4@92 if damn fast. The wonder Corvette driver, Ranger, has hit a best of 7.0 in the 1/8th mile at one of the fastest tracks in the country so you're not to far off. Granted he ran a 102 but hey, you've still got a damn fast car.

That shows how good the track is at Irwindale. If you can't hook at Irwindale, you won't anywhere....
It might be worth it to you to drive up here on Thursday night to get some new personal bests ET wise. $20 every Thurs, gates open at 4:00pm---racing starts at 5:00pm till 10:00pm
