oh lord, not this again. First things first- good kill to the thread starter. S197 GT with CAI+tune and Z28+intake should be a toss up. But tell your neighbor to get his clutch fixed and do it again- I'd be really curious to see how a mild bolt on S197 stand up to a mild bolt on Z.
Now.... the SS is not faster than the Z28. All 98-02 TAs, Z28s, SSs, and WS6s had equally powerful LS1s roughly 350 bhp despite the 305 factory rating.
And as mentioned- LS1 engines dont need a tune for a CAI, it's actually relatively rare to get the engine tuned before intake and exhaust are done.
And if anyone tells you that stick is the way to go and autos are slow just nod you head and laugh inside. Autos are way better from a dig, because they're much easier to launch. Manuals usually end up spinning all of first gear or bogging- you'll get a lot of "I had no traction" excuses from guys who can't launch their cars and can't admit it. Also, your transimission shifts much faster than almost any manual driver you'll race. I think the auto is a great choice for racing- although perhaps not quite as much fun to drive.

Sorry I'm quite a ranter if you hadn't noticed.
I did not kill it was however about as even run as any I have ever had.
The first run the guy clutch was fine, I told him to go, and when he did, I did. The jump he got from that is where we stayed to 100mph and shut down. The next run was when I jumped him so bad and turned around and as he was telling about his clutch, dud, it was clutch funk everywhere. He has another camaro that I would not even venture to jump on, race cams and all the goodies that go with them, Dyno's solid 400hp. It is totally badass!!!!!!!
You said it was a Z28 right? They do not come stock with LS1's. As much as I hate to say it, if it was an SS and you are stock(not sure of your mods) he would have walked you. Those cars are no joke. They are high 12 second cars, and mid to low 12's with good driver and very few mods. Id say it was just an LT1 car. Good job hanging with him though!
An LS1 is an LS1, no matter if its in a Formula, Transam, WS6, Z28 or SS. There are some LS1's that are stronger then others. To this day the fastest stock 1/4 ever recorded came from a Z28.
I took on a 02 SS stick with flowmasters, and I actually beat him by a car length. I have a 06 GT Auto and at that time I had only a K&N intake, no tune nothing else.
