I live in an apt. complex and my neighbor has an '02 Z28. I got my 'o6 GT just before Christmas. As I am getting out of my car one evening he stops and asks me when would I like to see how my cars does against his. I waid anytime, that was just before New Years. TO doay I am washing my car and I see him coming down the street, I wave him down an tell him "let's do it", he says "sounds good to me".
Beside our complex is a 4 lane thats straight for about 1/4 mile, enough lenth to run a bit and then have time to shut down safely.
1st run I felt pretty confident that I could take him so I tell him to take off. he acts totaly suprised that I would would say that, and I have to tell him a couple of times to go ahead and take off. Finally he nails it and jumps out about a car length and I nail it when I see he takes off.
Thats where it stays until we shut down, no loosing ground or gaining ground. We line up to run again (I forgot to mention I have an auto and he has a stick) his girlfriend counts us off (he has his girl friend in his car and my 15 yr old is with me)this time I jump him big time out of the whole and he just shuts down and I shut down after seeing him.
He catches up and say his clutch is just slipping too bad to race anymore. He definitely was not BS'ing me cause I could smell burnt clutch BIG TIME!. When we first talked he said his car was completely stock. When we got back to the apts. we popped hoods and he had a CAI, so I knew he had to have a tune. I have the Airaide and Diablo tune.
THis was my first street race in over 23 yrs and believe me the rush is still totaly there. So not a kill and not a been killed just much fun.
Is his an SS? because they come stock with Ram air from the factory. And usually the cold air kits dont have to have tunes installed like the S197
Like I was saying he had (I think it said G-1 or G-2) on the CAI. It was a LS-1 I believe is the term.
I know stcks are the way to go, but I've not been beat out of the hole with my auto. I brake and bring R's to 2k and were off.
You said it was a Z28 right? They do not come stock with LS1's. As much as I hate to say it, if it was an SS and you are stock(not sure of your mods) he would have walked you. Those cars are no joke. They are high 12 second cars, and mid to low 12's with good driver and very few mods. Id say it was just an LT1 car. Good job hanging with him though!

I stand corrected. The 02's did come with an LS1. Again I ask, what are your mods? Because like I said they are high 12 second cars.

Camaro's are seriously no joke....I have had my azz handed to me several times by them...but it's also gone the other way just as many times.
I think stock LS1's typically run very low 13's and with a good driver can dip into the high 12's bone stock. But once they start modding it's hard to keep up.

It was a dead even run. I felt sure I could take him so I said, go ahead, now I know why he looked so surprised when I said for him to take of. Anyway when I saw him go I went and thats the way it was up to about 100 mph. his back end was even with my front end the whole time. I am pleased now that I know a bit more about LS1 camaro's. I am going to speed shop for dyno one evening this week. will keep you posted
I have a good friend who had an 02 Z28. We put an SLP airbox on it and it ran 12.60's on street tires! Before that time I didn't think to much of Camaro's but he proved me wrong.

My 01 SS ran high 12's with exhaust/tune and DRs. My LT1 383 Ran Low 12's normal aspirated. They are fast guys.... no doubt...even though they are now old news they can still put a hurting.

Your kidding right...
1998+ z28s ALL come stock with a aluminum LS1.
The SS came with 325 HP Stock.

the SS dynos the same as the other LS1s. it's like 290-310 rwhp stock for a 6spd. the more powerful ones are the '01-'02 with the Z06 intake. 310 RWHP is like 365 FWHP. the faster Fbodies are the low optioned Z/28's. and they're lighter than the new Mustangs.
