Be aware that New Jersey cars are failing inspection, ......now get this......because of the little white or clear plastic adhesive indicating your "next oil change" that your service mechanic or dealer would normally place on the top left of the windshield was there.
Absolutely silly, crazy and ludicrous, but true. Effective today, July 16 -- and as they said "with no exceptions"..... the officer said that any and all cars that have this white or clear little decal on their window will fail.
What's crazy, is that every car....and I mean every car that was coming off the general inspection line today FAILED! What was happening at the Paramus inspection station was that the line for re-inspection was getting longer than the inspection line itself.
Believe me when I say there was an uproar from all these NJ drivers standing in line. Mainly because everyone was blind sided and were caught unaware of this new situation. All I did was simply remove the decal from the window and I was fine....I passed inspection.
But, the amount of wasted time, effort and efficiency at the MV station was insane!!!!! Instead of keeping cars moving out...the station inspectors were busy with an extended line of re-inspections....which of course was holding up the usual inspection process.
When I asked why didn't he tell me BEFORE I went through the line so that we'd have less congestion at the station, or at least put up a sign that indicated this new rule is in place...STARTING TODAY so that people would not be standing in some other line with their cars idling wasting time and valuable gas would be smart. He indicated that they were not allowed to do so.
Therefore, in an effort to save my NJ friends time and aggravation, I am passing this bit of information on to you all. You should also pass this on to any other NJ driving friend as well.

Wow I'm glad I don't live in Jersey anymore.I was born and raised there and left many years ago.I can rember even back in the 70's how stressful inspection time was. They once failed me because my rear view mirror had a crack in it.

Funny, my wife and I say that to each other all the time. We really miss the food, though!
For the life of me, though, I can't figure out why they couldn't post a sign. It's not like you're paying for the inspection, and then paying for the re-inspection, right? It doesn't give them any more income for a reinspection.
I'm not sure how it works in other states (other than PA) but NJ seemed unusual, because you could go to a state-run inspection station, and get a free inspection. Or, what I did, since I knew I had vehicle issues that would have been expensive to fix, was to take it to a private inspection station, the grungier the better. I gather that they were happy for the money, and unless something was REALLY blatantly wrong (i.e only three wheels, missing hood, etc.) they'd pass it, and charge you $60-$70 for two years.
I ran for four or five years with no reverse lights (turned out to be an electrical problem when I got it fixed in PA), and a broken e-brake.
I guess I'm still bitter at having to spend $200+ to replace a windshield with a vertical crack WAY on the passenger side, outside of the driver's line of sight, which passed inspection for years in PA. But apparently you can't have any cracks or dings in the windshield in NJ!
My wife did get by with a chip in NJ a few times by tossing a newspaper up on the dash so it was hard to see because of the reflection (and that still happily passes PA inspection!)

And you can't even pump your own gas in NJ...you know that those fuel pump jockeys will take really good care of your car's rear quarter fender/fuel door area as they shove that fuel nozzle into your tank.
No thanks!

And after that, they drool gas down the side, and if you're lucky, wipe it off with a gritty rag!
I once had the pleasure of waiting in line while the current fuel pump jockey showed the 16-17 year old new guy how to pump gas. Because you won't know how since you've never had to do it!

When I got mine "privately" inspected, I looked for a rinky dink place that looked like it needed the money. They charged me $60-$80, but never gave me any issues over not having an e-brake or reverse lights in my truck.

i would just like to shine some light on the oil change issue. yes the inspectors were told by upper management to strictly inforce the policy which was to fail all stickers on windshield with the expception of: department of defense, inspection stickers obviously and transparent oil change stickers(transparent should have been ok) this was a huge problem in the north and not so much in the south where i used to work. 2 days ago however the policy was updated and now anything above the as1 line on the winshield which is about six inches from the top right on one of the edges is ok and should recieve an advisory pass.(an advisory pass basically means nothing. it just says that you agree to fix the item but dont fail inspection for it)
as far as the $ issue with the inspection. its basically included in the registration fee atleast thats how the state looks at it so you do pay them for it essentially. and also the state does pay the company that runs the inspection for each inspection and also each reinspection so this might have something to do with methods
NJ inspection sucks. The people that work there are miserable pricks. Please, an oil change sticker? What a bucnh of BS. Oh, but it is ok to drive 24/7 with an EZ Pass tag mounted to the windshield. My God, NJ sucks these days. If it were not for my job I'd be in North Carolina.
The state inspections are awful, when i first moved to jersey i took my 85 there, they shook the crap outta my car with that rough road testing crap i passed but ive never been back since, always pay to save my suspension the unnecessary BS that and it saves me from wasting hours of my time waiting for them to treat my car like crap. my 95 had never seen state facility and 96 never will
If the sticker is above the little line on top of the windshield it is legal. It's even legal to tint your windshield as long as it doesn't go below the line.
