Default Too tame: What exhaust should I change to?

I would be interested in your opinions on what to do about the passenger car exhaust on my new Shelby GT500. What should I do?

Should I change just the axle back? Then I could add headers later.

I was thinking moderate change, not like the SLP "LoudMouth", since it is a convertible. I have the Random Tech on my Corvette and it is very loud. I love it, and it keeps the spouse from driving my toy! (no I am not that smart, I wish I could claim that one).

What brand should I go with? Who allows for adding headers later?

Why don't you see 3" dual exhaust? With it so easy to approach 600hp with a new CAI, aftermarket exhaust and pulley change, I think 3" would be required. NO?

Thanks for your help!

I don't know why you couldn't add headers later on, and any cat back is probably better than the factory setup. I don't see why you couldn't go up to at least 3 inches, with that much power you could step up. You'll get a lot of votes for Pypes, Flowmaster, with a GT500 I personally would have to get the Loud Mouth but you don't want it that loud. I say probably the Flowmaster system.

The SVT tech told me to go with the KR system when they finally get it out this spring. Like I threw on some Bassani mufflers but it really seems to make the car drone...I'm not sure what they are using on the KR but he said to go from the headers back. I'm sure it will have a higher flow catback than stock.

I'm partial to the FRPP (Borla) Stingers. Best of the 6 axlebacks I've had on there.

I had straitpipes, no mufflers.Very loud, loved them.i would vote for the macs for you,a very deep sound and not too loud. That is what i have on now until the spring.

Default Great feedback, I should have asked what did you pay too or where to buy

OK, you sound like me the most, since I had 3 on my Firehawk, 2 on my Formula and 2 on my Corvette. Can you tell me the pluses and the drawbacks & why you ended up where you did? And what maybe your second choice is? Do you want to sell that one to me? Also, cost, and where to buy them, if not from a forum supplier.

I like to support the forum folks and will if they sell them. I am thinking of starting with a 3" axle back stainless using a 2 1/2 to 3" band step up. That way if I keep the car and decide to go with the SuperSnake I won't be out too much. But, I have heard now they are not going to allow any SuperSnake conversions on the Convertible, BOO HOOO!

Default Straight pipes are basically what I have had, but this is a Vert

Ok, GTGirl, I'll bite, why? You must be in on what the KR plan--COOL! I'd like to be going to the SuperSnake, but Convertibles might be out!?!

Also, I'd go straight pipe, or Loud Mouth if it wasn't a vert. I did like the MagnaFlow on the Firehawk I had. I have never been fond of Flowmasters on the LS1, but they do sound great on a BB Chevy though. One guy did say they're great on GT. Maybe I should check out some sound bytes.

Do you Stang guys have a great website for technical issues like the LS1tech.com site? It was the central site for anything technical? I have been told since I am doing CAI too, I should definately buy a custom tune, or take it to a good tuner shop. That would make sense since air/fuel is much more important on a supercharger car.

I probably will hold off on headers for now, and just start with axle back. Does anyone know a good shop or chain that can build a replacement pipe using the take off? I know these machines exist, but they are not cheap. Some of the custom header shops do this but I am totally new to the Mustang world.

What do all you say about the Pypes with the resonators at mid length versus at back of car w a muffler? I might go with them just to promote them on the Power Tour. I inquired and they said hell yeah!

Regarding the drone, my experience has always been it is confined to a small range of RPM, like the LS1 is notorius for 1750 to 1900 rpm. So if you have 3.42 gears you don't drive at 70mph. At 75 it is minimized.

So do a lot of these things transfer to the Mustang 5.4L as well? Or is it a total different animal like the Chevy big block?

I have so much to learn! I wish I would have bought that '67 Fastback w/high performance 347ci fuel injected I saw at the Mecham auction a few years ago! IT was PERFECT, SOUND, COLOR, AND ALL!

i believe that the drone is approx at 2,000 to 2,500 RPM's. Its not all those 500 RPM's, i just forget exactly what rpm's the car drones at. but thats why i have the GTA's, no drone at all.
