I've never understood the hangup with driving a stick. I think some of you watch too many movies. I can't even drive a stick; never learned how and no one today wants their clutch burned up by me. Whatever. The auto gets me to where I'm going just as effectively.
What good is 'banging through gears' or 'feeling the car' if you are seeing my tail lights in the process?
Why not just get a GT500 and put a built 5R55S on the back? I'm almost certain that's what they use on trucks and it should fit. If I could get my hands on a GT500 engine relatively cheap, I'd make the swap in a hot minute.
What is the point of having 500 HP if you can't slam through the gears and remove some rubber from your rear tires???
But an automatic in a sports car?
What is the point? Well with the auto, you can slam that go pedal and leave plenty of rubber behind and still get up and go. A lot of incapable drivers can't get those cars off the line for the life of them. I sure would love a 2nd car for stick, but my automatic does great..
I love the people that are uneducated on the fact that an automatic is still just as good, if not better because of consistency. Sure a stock auto vs a stick from a dig may not always get them off the line (because the stick driver launches it above 3k easy), but same goes with the track- if you take a auto GT put a converter on it with DR's, you can kiss that manual goodbye..
My favorite thing through highschool: Getting cracked on because my GT is automatic. Most commonly heard things include:
It must be hard to get an automatic to do a burnout/spin the tires..
My car will win because it is lighter and stick(dumb ricers)
That car can NOT do 13's, it is prob running high 14's.
Thats a girls car.
You can't put it sideways and drift it.
It is harder to keep it under control, especially if it has a s/c.. 500hp is way too much for the auto to handle.
So many dumb opinions.. It is funny people have stated in this thread that the experience from driving a 5spd manual vs a 5spd auto is nothing to compare.. I do not see how this is possible? My friend has a 05 5spd manual gt, i drive it whenever i want and honestly, it is fun but it is NOT ANYMORE THRILLING THEN AN AUTO.. Sorry guys, deflate your ego's a bit jk
My car can chirp from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd like a Manual, i can never miss a shift and it can downshift just as fast.. All you guys have on us auto guys is you can downshift to slow the car down.. =).. If i could keep this car and buy a 2nd GT, it would be a stick.. For weekend fun, auto for DD.

The pee your pants factor is not the stick, its the 5.4L S/C V8 pushing 500hp that will do it..

GT500 and automatic should never be used in the same paragraph, let alone the same sentence!
Don't tell that to GT500 Girl. She pulled the Tremec out of her torch red with white stripes GT500 and dropped in an automatic. The auto is more consistent at the strip. You can't argue against an automatic transmission from a performance standpoint.
Looking back at the first musclecar era, most of the 426 hemi engines were ordered with the torqueflight 727 automatic. However, the hemi cars with 4-speed manual transmissions are the most highly sought after now (and sell for the really big bucks). The same is true with all the other great cars from that era (like the 1970 LS6 454/450hp Chevelle SS). The 4-speed manual cars are all worth more than the same models with automatics. Why? The fun factor. You're more involved in the driving experience with a manual. You do something other than keep your foot to the floor to make it chirp the tires with each shift.

I am no expert when it comes to the track results, but when I bought my '05 GT vert, the first thing I did was to see if it was a manual or an auto. If it had been an auto, I would have walked away with no deal. I love stick shift vehicles. No, I do not particularly care whether a manual is better than an auto (or vice-versa) for any specific conditions. To each is their own.
I love an automatic in my truck. I have driven trucks (of all sizes) with manual trans and auto trans, and prefer an auto in a truck. I have driven sports cars with both manual and auto trans, and discoverd I prefer the manual in sports cars. Although, my Chevelle SS was an auto, and I loved it as much as I would have had it been a manual.
I think that the GT500 sould come with either a manual or auto tranny....maybe make one standard and the other an option.
Stock for stock, it depends on the driver. Most cannot drive sticks like they think.
Do some mods and a manual is no match for an auto. Everytime you push that clutch pedal in you lose speed and distance. This is true for all vehicles, not just mustangs. Sticks are for show and autos are for go
If that was true then every race car out there would be an automatic transmission. If you are good and can match revs like I can you can shift with out using the clutch. You can also put in a short throw shifter and make up for the lag that you are talking about. Its all personal preference. I wouldn't have any other transmission in my GT. The sixer is just for cruising so the automatic is ok. But when it comes to the autocross course the manual is definitely the way to go.

It seems to me, that if you can afford a GT500, then swaping it to a auto shouldn't be a huge financual stress. Just convert it, and then you can have a one-off car, and something to talk about. Problem solved. I like driving sticks, but couldn't find the right color car with a 5 spd in my price range when I was ready to buy, so I ended up with the auto (attached to a 4ltr) With the firm shift tune, it snaps harder on every shift than my old toploader did with my stroker motor. No complaints here with the auto, but hopefully someday I can own two mustangs, and the next one will be a gt with a stick.

It says a lot about a man who validates his "manhood" with his ability to drive a manual transmission.

Autocross is more about driver skill than drag racing is. You have to be completely in tune with the car and what it is doin at all times. Its easier to make the car do what you want it to do with a manual transmission. Not that I have anything against drag racers tho. That form of racing is more about the mechanics and engineering of the car. I will admit tho for drag racing an automatic is the way to go. You need the consistency there. On the autocross course if you have a sloppy shift you can make up for it easier than you can in a straight line

Ok let the flaming begin I love the gt500 but dont wont to be bothered with a stick When I get my grabber orange gt paid off I want to keep it cause I love it and you dont see many grabberoranges around were I live but would love a grabber blue gt500 with white stripes but dont want a stick.
Didn't Hertz car rentals have GT500's in Automatic versions. With the Traction Control switch disabled. If Hertz was able to do it, there must be a way.
