Default CA Registration

I live in CA and before I call the DMV just wanted to check for any CA owners. If I purchase a car from Ebay Motors and the dealer is not in CA, but the car is a 50 State Emissions car, can I register it in CA?? Has any CA owners done that??

Thanks, PCW

My friend bought a 50 State Z06 Corvette from an Illinois dealer because the dealers in California all wanted 10K or more above MSRP. For some reason having to do with sales tax savings, he needed to have 7,500 miles on it before registering it in California. So he drove it home the long way around. Must have been fun. You will have no trouble registering your car in California. The question is how much will you pay. May want to check the tax laws to see what works for you.

All,

Just talked to CA DMV and found out that as long as the car is a 50 State Emissions car, it can be bought in another state and registered in CA. You will pay the sales tax in the state that you buy it in and when you register it in CA you will pay the difference in sales tax between CA and the state you bought from. CA sales tax is always higher
