Default GT500 launch / Wheel Hop in 1st gear

Hello Everyone,

I have been having problems with the rear end on my used GT500 "hopping" when I go for a hard/quick launch in 1st. No burning of expensive rear rubber just bumpy hopping! It makes no difference if I have the traction control on or off (In my 2005 Mustang GT I always had it off for a proper launch). I have been reading about wheel hop elsewhere in the forums and my very early 2007 GT500 (preproduction unit #12 which has 60k miles on it) also does it when I hit any bump at all in a turn and try to accelerate. Again the 05 GT did not do this. I have been driving it since June and my shifting in 1st has gotten quite good (a close friend who races Porsches for fun had a hard time with clean shifts from first when he drove my GT500 last week) but several times when I have tried to beat someone off the line it has started hopping and I had to back off. Not good!!! It is OK to tell my my technique sucks because a solution, either mechanical or driver education, is more important than ego.

Thanks,

MSB Mustang / Mark

Ford used the same upper 3rd link and lower trailing arms as the V6 and GT.
The did use a 25% stiffer rubber bushing, which would be fine if you only made 25% more power than a V6.

Under hard acceleration the pinion will climb as the rubber bushings compress. Once they bottom out, the rubber does what it does best and bouces back causing a loss of traction. Once you regain traction, the process starts all over again.

You need to do something like this:
gt500-launch-wheel-hop-1st-gear-555-4105-175.jpg
gt500-launch-wheel-hop-1st-gear-0506_billet_control_arms.jpg

Hillbank Motorsports, as site sponsor, should have them in stock.

Ask for part numbers 555 4105 and 555 4406.

All the GT500's have this problem. I did what Pkstanger said and I also added some QA1 adjustable shocks in the rear and it really helped.

Evolution performance has a suspension package for $1000 eliminates wheel hop and lets you hit 1.4 60 foot times with drag radials, they run this same set up on there 3.4 whipple GT-500 that runs 9's

My next stop at Evo (was there yesterday for a stage 2) will be for an aluminum driveshaft with loops and suspension. Maybe even add the new throttle body! 10Sec 1/4 mile wanna-be!

Default Most changes to suspension are done but hop still there

Hi Everyone,

New yellow adj Koni Shocks (front and rears) and J&M Products Lower Control arms are now installed but the hop is still there! However it is reduced, but only about 40% or so. The upper control arm goes in tomorrow and I will report back the results.

Also it rides a little rougher now and the vibration noise on hard bumps from the dash area is worse. The online shop that sold me all the parts (Brian at HotPart.com who has been great to work with!) said he thought there was a TSB for the 2006 GT's that talks about a vibration noise coming from the exhaust pipes that appears to come from the dashboard area. He thought he read that the pipes need to be hose clamped to get rid of the noise? Does anyone know anything about this? I could not find anything about it online?

Thanks,

MSB Mustang

the TSB he may be refering to is 06-04-01 the noise may be from the exhaust hanger isolator at the #3 crossmember being loose-v6 starts at 850 rpm to 1500 rpm-v8 is 1200 rpm to 3200rpm.the fix is to install a 3" worm clamp around the rubber isolators.hope this helps.

Thanks whtstdhrse,

I will look that one up. Have you noticed that noise on your GT500 when you are on rough roads?

Default Exhaust Hanger TSB Noise

Hi Everyone,

Just got back from too long a business trip back east and I now understand why you won't drive your GT500's in the winter in Canada and NE USA. Never saw so many filthy cars on the road before! AMD lots of rocks!!! It is nice to live here in CA and be able to drive my GT500 year round!

I recently did the new TSB 08-3-4 (which replaced TSB 06-04-01). I jacked the car up and then cut the brackets off with a Saws-All, as the new TSB said to do. Then I popped out the two halves of the metal brackets and the rubber piece inside them. The TSB said to bend the rod hanging off of the exhaust pipe down another inch or so but I could only bend it about 1/2" down. There was tons of clearance though and it has been fine. The loud noise that came from the center stack area every time I hit any kind of bump is gone now but the noisy meters in the dash board display are now more noticeable as is a rattle from the area where the top of the front seat belts attach to the side panels. I have been unable to find a complete fix for those noises yet but they are both much less irritating than the hanger banging noise.

New tires are next and then a new air intake with a new tune also. Maybe the new tune will make more exhaust noise and mask the dash vibrations. I drove the car to work for the first time since the changes
and my trip. No road bump center stack noises at all! Very enjoyable ride today.

I cheated...used a shop. Started to do it myself but without a lift it was too difficult for my 54 year old body.

The wheel hop is gone now but the cars rides quite a bit rougher and I can hear every gear and rear suspension clunk and clank now. The car does handle much better though and it launches better also. I do drive 100 miles in it every day so the rougher ride is a bit tough on my upper back and neck.

Now I need new tires and maybe those will help the ride a bit...then again new tires might make it worse? Going with the Nitto 555's on all four this time 255/45/18 in front and 285/40/18 in the back, same as stock. Was going to try the Nitto INVO's but they don't make anything that will fit on the rear although they do make a 255/45/18 for the front.

How bad is your wheel hop?

Mark..that's normal when changing to a stiffer suspension. I hear EVERYTHING in my car, but I prefer better handling, launching etc. I doubt tires will make any difference unless yours have problems or are unbalanced.
