Default Some advice please!

Hey everyone,

Brand new to the board.I have a 69 mustang Mach 1 car S coded (390)
that i am restoring. My wife & I are 3 weeks shy of our 25th wedding anniversary. We had Mustangs in high school when we were dating.I had a 69 mach 1 she had a 78 stang2 with v6 in it.

I just came across a 78 Mustang 2 with the 2.8L v6 4 speed car with T-tops.Itll be in my driveway tonight! Its a lil rusty but runs & drives.
I guess i am wondering if I should keep it original or slap a 302 in it & make it a cobra clone! Then i could race it on Friday nights at the local drag track.

Anyways how hard is it to yank that v6 & shove in a 302?What has to be done to allow for it?Ive heard all kinds of things from the fenders are different ect ect.Any help would be greatly appreciated !!!

The diffictuly can be quite great as you would need to swap drive train components and suspention components. A must would be engine mounts front suspention would need to be beefed to hold up the V8. Depending on rearend size you might need to change that. Idk about tranny. My case is extremly difficult because of my 4cyl. But you could do it i'm sure.

I would definitely go with the v-8, and if you have to build a 302 you should go 347 not much more money if you’re doing a rebuild anyway. Keep us posted, sounds like fun

Actually doing a V8 swap isn't that difficult, tracking down the parts is.

Ebay and the various mustang message boards' classifieds will become your best friend when it comes to tracking down the pieces.

Buy a 1978 Ford Shop Manual-the schematic might be in there. If not, look for a 1978 Ford Vacuum Schematic. A V-8 swap would be easiest if you had a v8 mustang ii parts car as there is A LOT of parts you'll need to switch over-the special 302 engine mounts, special double hump trans mount, correct radiator, special exhaust manifolds, mustang ii specific v8 bellhousing and v8-4 speed trans, mustang ii specific 302 oil pan, complete suspension, and more. Most of these major parts are specific to the mustang ii because of the very cramped space and if you buy everything off Ebay you'll spend a small fortune gathering all that you'll need. Ebay is a great place to get any parts but find a mustang ii v8 parts car-the well optioned Ghia usually would have a v8 in it.
