mustang IIs and smog

i was just wondering, i live in California and i own a 78 cobra II will i ever be smog exempt. has anybody heard anything?

Since your car was built 75 an up, your kinda screwed. anthing pre75 is exempted from smog equipment, and since yours is a 78 you have to maintain regs and being in Cali makes it worse..... time to move?

I live in Las Vegas, we have annual smog checks that are pretty stringent also. I brought my 77 with V8 to be smogged last week and when the guy looked under the car and saw that I was running true duals with no cats I thought I was screwed so did he. He called DMV and then hooked up to smog machine with the do hickies shoved up both tailpipes. Brought it up to speed and then down to idle, the reports go directly to DMV and then print out, so if you fail thats it. Wow to my amazement when the copy for me printed out there were no smog readouts it just said PASSED, whew... I was then advised that if I run classic plates I will not have to run smog each year, what a racket.

You can thank the Governator for smogging your 78. The cutoff date was rolling back each year. 25 years old and older were smog exempt. But the Governator changed the law and stopped at 1975 and older being smog free. '76 and newer will always have to be smogged. He makes more money this way. That's why I specifically bought a '75. Smile as you write the check!

When I was in Texas know smog testing was required and now that I am in Maryland. The DMV told me that all I had to do was register it as a classic. No smog test needed.
