Although it can be done, a simple flip open cap would require extensive reworking and modifing the sheet metal of the quarter panel and a matching fill tube for the tank so a good seal could be made. I looked at several older flip open type caps on several makes of Fords and other manufacturers as well as billet type aftermarket caps and decided it was too big a project for me. If you have the know how, go for it and post photos. I got the effect I wanted by just adding a billet cap. I have thought about adding a dummy type hinge from another cap to give the appearance of a flip open while still retaining the screw off cap, but have not looked into this in depth yet.

The FORD EXP is almost the same size as the opening as the II's. I have seen it done.

The EXP had a fuel door, I don't believe this is the look he wants. I believe we are speaking of the hinged racing caps, such as this one I found on E Bay, the problem would be that you would have to change the fill tube to a push on type rather than the II's screw / twist type for a good seal. This would look cool though.

Default Flip open gas cap

I got an Enots gas cap on Ebay. These are racing gas caps from England, usually on Triumphs and MG's etc. Also used on AC Cobras and the like. I had an aluminum spacer made that threads into the cap (3" pipe thread) and bolts to the Mustang using the stock holes from the inside of the fender. It has a short nipple that accepts a 2" hose. I cut the stock filler tube and used a short piece of fuel resistant rubber hose and two hose clamps to connect the two. Works great! Cap ran about $60.

If I remember right, member GT140 used a similar cap, but recessed it into the fender with some significant fiberglass work.

This company sells a copy of the Enots caps in several sizes:
British American Transfer

They also carry these flush-fitting aircraft/motorcycle type caps:
British American Transfer

They have good drawings with dimensions, so you should be able to measure and get the right one.

I love the look and convenience of the flip open cap, but the flush mount Aero lockable cap would probably fit better with what I need.

The MII factory cap lends itself to some customization also...just disassemble, cut a circle of aluminum to the proper diameter, and add Allen-head socket screws for a mechanical look. You could even have the aluminum anodized or Powder Coated in a matching or contrasting color...
