Default Big Brakes On Cobra II

Looking at a set of caliper brackets to run 11 inch rotors instead of the 9's on my Cobra II but none of the venders want to tell which calipers to use with the brackets . I guess they want you to buy from them . Any one know or have any idea which caliper to use?

Why don't you use the setup from a 74-76 ford elite or gran torino elite. I bought a set of Aerospace big front brakes for my 74 grand torino. They send me the ones for a Mustang II. All I had to do was drill a hole for a mounting bolt.

Of the 11" MII brake kits that I've seen (non-streetrod), they have all used either the later ('81+ ?) "Metric" single piston or an earlier SAE version. All the good vendors will give you that info (Heidt's, TCI, etc.)

There was a caliper adapter for the early '80's Fox caliper, but I haven't seen it in a while. Those calipers didn't really have any advantages over the GM version other than having a Ford part number.

Baer Racing and Wilwood also have MII kits, but they are generally better engineered and more pricey than the StreetRod kits.

What vendor and part were you looking at? Are you 5-lug or 4-lug?

I was looking at some of the caliper adapters on ebay and online. I know they use the 11 inch Granada rotors but was wondering what make, model GM calipers to ask for . I'm still 4 lug but want to change to 5 all the way around.

Nigel, what exactly do I need from the Grand Torino? A complete list of parts would be very helpful and appreciated. Also, what did you do to change your rear to 5 lug? Thanks

The main thing is to ask if they have the "metric" GM calipers or not. If they don't know, then I would pass.

There are several reputable companies selling these kits or just the brackets for reasonable prices:

Complete 11" Brake Kit for Mustang II, Ford Bolt Pattern

Must II GM Caliper Brackets 4.50 Bolt Pattern 11" Rotor (just the caliper brackets I think)

Nigel, I would also like to see a list of parts the parts you used from the Torino, along with any mods you made to them. Its always good to have another source for parts!

Raghead, there are basically 3 ways to get a 5-lug pattern in the rear axle of a II:

-Replace the entire axle housing (late-50's Ford 9", '65-'66 Mustang, Maverick, early Granada). The spring perches have to be moved slightly.

-Use Maverick, '65-'66 Mustang, or early Granada used axles with early Ranger drums and MII bearing retainer plates.

-Order new axles from Moser and use the early Ranger drums and MII bearing retainer plates. Here is a thread on ordering new Moser axles:

I transfered the spindle, brackets, and the caliper. I replaced the brake lines with steel braided.

And the rotors. The rear I went with a lincoln versilles. Also had to move the perchs over a little. I just unhooked the brake line and removed everything. The porporting valve was the same.

What l got in my 76 Cobra II is, Front dics are 11' Granada rotors with GM calipers, which are fine and cheaper then the rest. The rear diff is from a 1998 Ford Explorer with discs. Its an easy swap. you need to relocate the leaf spring perches. And you need to get two right side axles, master cylinder, proportioning valve from a V8 Explorer. Then you need to get a shortter drive shaft. I got a aliminam one from a Ford rear wheel drive Mini Van, Windstar Aerostar or something. You can find all you need at your local Pick A Part, or Ebay. Good luck.
