How difficult is it to find a 302 in a fairly good condition? Any Ideas where to find them?

Finding the motor is the easy part if you are converting a four or six cylinder to a v-8 its the motor mounts that you are going to have a hard time finding and if you do you'll be paying alot for them. I sold an ok pair to someone for around $150. Mustang II v-8 motor mounts are scarce so good luck.

Ford 302 engines are a dime-a-dozen at most wrecking yards if you're not picky. Billions were built between 1968 and today (they're still in production through Ford Racing). Expect to pay between $150 (you-pull-it yards) and $1500 for an engine from a wrecking yard (depending on application, mileage, options, and whether or not they put a warranty on it).

If there's a particular 302 you're looking for, that's when you may have some issues locating what you're looking for.

A remanufactured 302 from a parts store specified for a mid-70s Ford will run you between $1,000-1,900 depending on the quality of the rebuild, the parts used, and the warranty. You may or may not have to pay a core charge on an engine like that.

A crate engine from a perfomance wholesaler like Summit Racing or Jeg's will cost a bit more, but tend to use better quality parts. Crate engines range from stock engines reassembled with premium parts to full-blown race engines.

A couple of other things to think and watch out for are, oil pan for II 302 is mustang II specific, most other 302 pans wont fit the II. Also 302 built after 1980 have a 50 oz. balance, and pre 80 have 28 oz. balance. if you are using a pre 80 c4 tranny and a 302 81 and up then the flexplate must be changed to 50 oz, which brings out another problem, which is that mustang II c4 is specific and comes with a smaller bell housing which in turn requires a smaller flexplate. Mustang II flexplates can be found at Art Carr Performance. So do your homework well before attempting this swap. I have done several and learned the hard way. Motor mounts for a II are definately hard to locate, but there are at least two members from the Mustang II Network that do sell them. If you need more info on the swap, email me and I will try and help you through it.
