i hate to rain on your parade, but in the December issue of Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords, i quote the response to a reader who wanted more II coverage, "You are entitled to your opinion, but we personally feel putting the names "Mustang" and "Cobra" on a Pinto took away from the name Mustang."

That's why I don't read "Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords" (should be called "late-model Mustangs and Ford Focus" since that's all they cover) and read "Mustang and Fords" and "Mustang Monthly".
If ya wanna get technical, putting the 79+ Mustang body on a Fairmont chassis takes even more away. At least the Pinto was infamous, the Fairmont was barely even noticed.

i was just saying that that is what MM& FF said. i personally have no problem with IIs. in my book, if you drive any mustang, 1964 1/2- present, you have good taste in automobiles. to each his own, as somebody said
the II will never be 100% accepted by the mustang community its a shame after all the II kept the dream alive in the mid 70's.I own a 78 II and pround of my car and thats really all that is important.
i have a 351 in my II, No problem dumping any new mustang or any other car on street. I get alot of respect for my II around here. When they put the 302 in it, All u have to do is build it up with alot of horse power. Good ol`American v8`s R hard to beat when built up.
i've been a subscriber to Mustang& Ford for years........i've seen PLENTY of Mustang II stuff& pictures in their magazine.More so than Mustang Monthly.
I have owned a number of classic Mustangs including a 428 SCJ and two Boss cars. I currently own a '06 GT Premium and yes, a 1977 Mustang II hatchback. I get a real kick out of these "real" Mustang owners who put down Mustang II's while polishing their 4 or 6 cylinder Fairmont or Falcon based cars. With all of the good 5 liter stuff available out there. The II can be easily be modified to run door to door with the faster Mustangs out there. One thing you learn as a long time car guy is never to put down someone's car because it's not popular with the clique.
If you want to get technical, the only "genuine" Mustangs are the 2005-2008's as they are the only one's with a dedicated chassis.

Yeah, but even it is loosely based on the Lincoln LS, and it's built in a Mazda factory.

You are correct. It is built in the Auto Alliance plant in Flat Rock, MI. The heritage thing is not a big deal to me. I only use the line when the Falcon or Fairmont based Mustang Mags start ragging on the II. That whole thing was originally fostered by the "classic" Mustang magazines and it perpetuated an attitude amongst Mustang enthusiasts that the II is somehow not worthy of carrying the name Mustang. I'll leave them to matching their part numbers and filing their points.
Now that the classic stangs are starting to dwindle in numbers at the shows, we appear to be gaining some credibility.
Kinda the same for 79-86 foxes. I happen to love the Mustang II and agree with it deserving as much appreciation as every other stang. I want to take a II and drop in a 300. Yes I finally have a formulated plan for one.
