Default 1978 Mustang T Top Roof Band

I was wondering how many of these cars are out there. My '78 has a T top roof, but there is also a 6" wide black band with stainless edges right at the rear of the tops. It wraps around the roof and ends at the bottom of the B pillars, covering 1/3 of the quarter windows. I considered leaving this off, as most T roof cars I've seen do not have it, but that would require filling the holes in the roof and replacing the window trim.

Really? I have seen more without it than with it. I really like it on your car. My car all black and without the band the smoked T tops and black trim blend in so well it looks like a normal hatchback. If the car stays black it can go either way but if I paint the car white w/ blue strips the black band will have to go. Thanks for your opinion.

Took mine off... you'll have to fill in the holes in the roof where the clips held the band on. I've got a ford poster showing a 77 cobra t top without the band, that one was white with the blue stripes.......I think its the 25 years of mustang poster.

I've seen that poster and that's the look I want to go for whether the car stays black or goes to white. Unfortunately the holes go through the black T top trim as well. How did you fill those?

Haven't done it yet. They make an aluminum fill that is like a bondo, I can then either powder coat them or paint them. Going with the original color on the car (emerald green) and painting some accent stripes over the hood and front fenders, then my trim will be a semi gloss black, like the stripes. It will work great for my application but you may have to find someone to fill the holes with metal and then replate the trim....just a thought.

Thanks! I won't need to replate, as the trim on my car is all factory black.

My 78 KC does not have one. I've never really looked closely at the cars that do have them, which I have seen a lot more of, but do they have pop out windows? My car has them and I figured that the Targa Bar would block the windows since it covers them. I think my car looks fine with out it. I think it depends on the color of the car, mine is white and I like it.

Be aware that if you want to remove the targa band from the exterior, you will have to modify the interior as well since cars with the targa band have a wider B pillar trim. You'll need to replace this as well or when looking in the car through the rear quarter window you'll see the back side of the interior panel. I have the targa band & prefer it myself, but would love to ahve the rear flip out windows which are not available with the targa band. You might be able to modify the targa band window mounts to allow the flip out windows. good luck.
