Default Hoods for 1976 'Stang

Looking to put a new hood on my '76 Mustang, I really liked the '77 stock hood I believe, the one that was modelled after the Firebird, I am looking for something that looks really intense and also one that would match well with stripes.

If you know specific hoods for sale link, or if you know a site that offers after-market hoods that go for a '76 Mustang II then link :] I really dont know much about hood compatibility, so I dont know if hoods not labeled for the '76 mustang will fit on and look proper on them, so information about that would be cool to.

As far as i know the '77 hood is exactly the same as the '76, infact the '75 & '78 hoods should be interchangable as well. The only MII hood that won't fit right on your car is a '74 because of a difference in length. The only differences w/the cobra & king cobra hoods is the addition of the hood scoop, which can be put on any MII hood. Also as far as i know there aren't any companies making hoods(other than stock style) for MII's. You may have seen hoods close to the style you like, but more than likely these were customized by the individual owners. Anyway, good luck w/your search

Also wouldn't mind seeing a pic of which firebird hood you're refering to

Hmm, I may be mistaken on the hood-- I remember reading something a while back saying the 76' 77' or 78' had a hood scooped modelled after that of a certain firebird, but I am unable to find it now (I found it on a google search), I did however notice a specific picture of a Firebird that has a tail that resembles the MII

Well, any information on how to go about adding hood scoops? Sorry, noob question, if I do do it though is it difficult, should I have a proffessional do it?

Yea, the cobra II's & king cobra's both had a hood scoop, but i've never heard anything about them being modeled after any firebird Anyway, as i said before, these are just simple hood scoops that can be bolted or molded on w/no need to buy a new hood. Wether you want to attempt to install it yourself, is your decision. While you're deciding that, you should consider a few other things....
1. The scoops came w/four mounting bolts, so if you want to install it 'factory correct', then you'd have to drill four holes in your hood to allow the bolts to slip through. I've also heard(but never seen) people removing the four bolts from the scoop, and simply using bondo to kind of mold it onto the hood. Last i've heard of a few people using double sided tape to attach a hood scoop, but i wouldn't imagine that would hold up well long term.
2. To the best of my knowledge, all MII w/the hood scoops were not functional. So you basicly have to decide if you want to just add it for 'styling' or if you actually want a functional hood scoop, which would involve cutting a rather large hole in your hood. You can see examples of functional hood scoops both here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1977-...QQcmdZViewItem
and here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1977-...QQcmdZViewItem
3. Some mustangs have the hood scoop installed w/the opening facing forward, some are facing backwards...that'll be a preference decision.

I think i'm pretty accurate in the above statements, but i honestly couldn't tell you how hard it would be to install. I bought a hood scoop for my MII a year ago w/the intentions of installing it myself, but i never got around to it. At this point i think i'm just going to sell it, so let me know if you're interested. If not, you can also find them for sale on www.ebay.com or www.mustangsunlimited.com although i believe the ones on mustangsunlimted have different measurements than the original ford scoops.

Anyway, good luck & welcome to the MII family

The trans am (76,77, and 78) was modeled after the mustang II. From the front spoiler to the rear one. Also the wheel flare (spats)from the trans am will mount right up to the mustang II.

Interesting, guess I did read it incorrectly.

mustang_iislow, thanks for the information.. I would like to make it a functional hoodscoop simply because it would be kind of a poser act not to, and I dont like posing anything-- but that all depends on if I actually have the use, cause I do want the cosmetics and I dont have to much interest in making a car all super if I wont be racing her, and currently I dont plan to do to much racing, even if I have a V8

Of course it should be functional.
The only reason to have the scoop facing forward really is for looks and/or cold air for the engine.
If you can't connect the scoop to the intake it's better to have it facing backwards.
If you mount it facing back it will help evacuate hot air from the engine. -> A good thing...

I guess it depends on the engine and the set-up you have? And what you feel looks best.

just to let you know i was a gm before ford but then i wised up and got a real car that brings me here to the II site for my 76 cobra resto........ anyways THE ORIGINAL POSTER NIGEL the trans am was not no way designed after the Ford Mustang II Cobra or the King Cobra for the Pontiac Trans Am had the spoiler front side and rear starting in the very sought after 1970 trans am the most seeked out trans am beside the 77 smokey and the bandit edition the mustang II just borrowed per say the trans am look for the king cobra to enhance sales in which it did now dont quote me on that part part...............but the front side and rear spoilers started with pontiac in 1970 that i know and if you want the shaker hood type of scoop you must go back to 1970 for the mustang and buy the shaker hood set up and convert your hood to that style cause if i read your post right thats the sccop you were looking which isnt a scoop per say but attaches to the air cleaner assy HOPE THIS CLEARS THIS UP FOR YOU and i will prob be corrected on some of this i am sure but this is what i know from dealing with GM's most of my life till i got my current real car 1976 cobra II
