Default 1978 Mustang II Break Upgrade

I have a 1978 mustang cobra, I would like to know if I can use the front roters from a newer mustang to change my four bolt to five and like wise with the back. With the back do I just need to swap rearends to make the conversion. What is the best way to upgrade my brakes and switch to five lug. Thank you, Airic

i heard you can use granada front brakes to convert the front end to 5 lug, but i dont remember the year, i think 77.

you could probably swap axles from another 8 inch rear end. im not sure what vehicle with an 8 inch rear would have 5 lug axles though. that seems the easiest though.

if you have the time and means to do so, i heard an 8.8 inch rear end from an 87-93 mustang is really close to the same size as our mustang II's, then you can swap in ranger axle shafts, which is supposed to be a common procedure.

Default My 1978 cobra will stop on a dime

Thank you for the great information. I'm going to need some stopping power for the 347 powerplant in my II. Four wheel disks is a must. Five lug gives you more wheel options too. thanks again, Airic

You can go with the brake setup from a 74 to 76 Gran Torino or the Elite also the 74 to 78 Thunderbird and Cougar. They are all 5 lug and the spindles will fit the Mustang II.

74-76 Thunderbird won't work, it's got it's own bolt pattern (along with the Lincoln Mark V) that is actually the same as a Chevy truck, and the spindles are much bigger in the T-bird (I used to have a '75 T-bird, and it's the same from 1973-1976, 77+ stuff may work though, they were smaller and lighter cars).

If you want to really upgrade your brakes, Wilwood, as well as several others make kits for the IIs and their suspensions due to the wild popularity of the Mustang II suspension with hot rodders and drag racers.

if your just looking for a front 5 lug pattern, just pick up a street rod magazine. Many mustang II suspension part manufactures offer the II's rotors with a 5 lug pattern.
