Default 302 cylinder heads

How's it going out there? I was wondering, I'm eventually going to do a 347 bore over on my 302 and had a question on my stock cylinder heads. Is the old restrictive head that they made for this car worth rebuilding and porting or should i not waste my time and just get after markets? I was looking at the GT40s off of summit.

Thanks for your comments

Regardless of engine size, stock heads ported to the max will get murdered by some very mild aftermarket heads. On a 347, stock heads will be like trying to breathe through a straw. Even the GT40 will be marginal at best, you need to step up to some heads with at least 180-190cc intake ports and 2.02 valves. I'd suggest some AFR 185's, TFS High Ports, Dart 195's, something like those because less will choke that 347.

If you're going with an engine build-up, then go with new heads. Factory heads really aren't worth the trouble.. Good for cheap HP if you port em, but you're better off getting better flowing ones.

I would have to say go with new head i just had my 302 stroked out to 347 and for the price i payed for a 3 angel valve job and porting and polishing i would have been halfway ther on new gt40s but over all i still make good power about 350hp at the crank with a carb and 14.2i n the quater mile . and im alredy considering new heads

Don't bother with the Cleveland heads, intake manifolds are almost as rare as hen's teeth. By the time you have up graded the stock heads the cost is excessive for the outcome. You'll never get the flow numbers that you will need/want. There are so many better aftermarket heads available at a reasonable price that it would be foolish not to go this route. The usual reason for up grading stock heads is because certain race classes demand the use of them. ---Chuck
