I found the chrome valve cover for my 2.3 on ebay... I found an Offenhauser 4-bbl. intake for 2.3s there as well...
You can get away with a lot of "off the Autozone shelf" stuff on a MII with the 2.3.
Replace your ignintion coil with one from MSD, Accel, Mallory, or some other performance brand...
My current 2.3 setup includes:
Holley 2-barrel carb. (found on Ebay for $10)
Chrome "POWER BY FORD" valve cover (found on Ebay for $12)
MSD blaster coil (Autozone, $27.99)
Federal Mogul Cam (High-performance option, $170 at Advance Auto Parts)
Cherry-Bomb glasspack muffler ($25.99 at Autozone)
Mr. Gasket Air Cleaner ($19.99 Autozone)
If you find the Offenhauser 4-bbl. intake, don't try to go bigger than a Holley 390-cfm or Edelbrock 400-cfm carb...
If you really want to push some horses... You can get a full 2.3 turbo swap out from a turbo Mustang, Merkur, or T-bird Turbocoupe...
Hope this helps
