It really depends on the overall condition of the car; I paid $1000 just a couple of months ago for a '76 Mustang II Ghia V8/automatic that needed a tuneup, the brakes bled, carpet, and a dash pad... I paid $200 for one seven years ago with a 4cylinder and a 4spd that (barely) ran and drove and had serious rust issues and the entire interior was ruined in it...
A good bet would be to see if he'll let you take it to a reputable mechanic and get it checked over really good, shouldn't cost more than $20-100 for a good checkup on the car (depends on the shop, some will even do them for free).
