Default What is the best way to get more power out of a 2.3 without turbo 1978 Mustang II

My step son & i are building a 78 stang II to race on a 1/3 mile oval in caribou maine and we are looking for power upgrades. Any help like carb info timing info would hellp alot. I heard that i can put a holly 500 on and gain 15 horsepower is this true?

i forgot to mention our car has a 2.3 4 cyl

I'm going to be very boring and you're not going to like what I have to say.

The cheapest way to get some serious power is to buy a new engine.
If the rules prohibit a new engine... prepare to spend some money.

This is a universal "truth" for most older small displacement engines. I don't really know the 2.3L stang engine.

As for the carb... and no... I don't know very much about carbs. The challenge is getting more air into the engine, fuel is the easy part.
The more air, the more power.

How much power do you want btw?

Lets see... I've put on a header, Removed all smog stuff and capped all the ports except for the distributor vacuum advance and the PCV valve, redone my exhaust (2 1/4 in no cat converter, and Flowtech Warlock muffler). The warlock gives a performance sound without being overly loud or obnoxious. Uncapped is another story
I plan on working on my intake system next but these mods seem to have made a noticeable difference. I can leave rubber in first and chirp shifting into second.

have u tried racer walsh ? / under drive pulleys -elec. fan - elec fuel pump . racer walsh says the best intake u can get 4 a 2.3 is a factory lower off a fi. car . 87-92 mustang i think proably few others but they sell the adapter 2 put on a carb.. u can also put a roller cam and followers in.. about any mustang or ranger that had a coilpack instead of a dist. should be roller . i don't know if it would be much extra hp. or not -any weight u can take off the car -if u can lower it any -advance the timing as high as u can high of octane gas u can afford - ram air system -autolite plugs - windage tray
