Paul, is this the system you were thinking of?

Heartthrob Exhaust High-performance Dual Exhaust : JC Whitney: PT Cruiser Parts & Accessories

It is an custom-fit exhaust system without mufflers included manufactured by HeartThrob Exhaust designed for 1977-1993 Mustangs. I'm wondering how they are making it fit the Mustang II and Fox body chassis and still be "custom-fit"

I'd give HeartThrob Exhaust a call at 320-693-0222 and make sure it will fit a Mustang II before ordering it. I have a feeling they think the Fox body Mustangs came out in 1977.

I contacted HeartThrob but no luck with 74 - 78 Mustangs, I saw a link a while ago that I tried that did the exhaust but have since lost it. but thanks for the lead.

I posted the question over on the MustangII.net forums and the general concensus over there is that there is NO WAY a system could fit the Mustang II AND Fox body chassis.

I spent about five hours last night searching the net and did find an old archived thread about a 1977 Mustang II exhaust and a link to a pre-bent exhaust system. When I clicked on it it came up as a 1977 Mustang system but on closer inpection it was obvious it was the same HeartThrob system advertised as fitting 1977-93 Mustangs.

As far as I can tell, nobody makes a Mustang II system. One of my neighbor's kids works for Bens Auto so I'm going to check with him and see if they still have the punch card for the Mustang II system. I know their bending machine is from the 60's or 70's so I'm betting they won't have a problem making one up.

Just followed up verbally with AutoAnyThing who rang up the manufacturer and indeed this part does not fit the 1977 mustang although their site says it does. Anyways order cancelled and refund transactions coming. Will have to head to local pipe bender..........

Due to the offset fuel tank, setting up a dual eshaust on a Mustang II is a little tricky. The best way is to go to an exhaust shop and have a system made. If you are adding headers you will need the Double hump transmission crossmember made for the Mustang II with dual exhausts. I had my cat removed and both pipes run parallel down the passenger side over the rear axle and into a single Dynamax muffler. Whats nice is that it is a true dual exhaust muffler with built in X Pipe. 2 pipes in 2 pipes out. saves weight and compact. Sounds great and the whole system only ran me about $220. bucks fully welded bent and hung.

Here is a link to the specs, I paid $132.00 from Summit racing Jegs sells them as well, but these are available from other sources as too. I went with the 3.00 inlet / outlet size in anticipation of running a stronger engine, I am in the process of a 300hp roller 331 right now.

Good idea stangII. I thought of something like that but with 2 mufflers. Your idea was better and made more since now that U look back at it.

if you want a really trick setup and want to run an equal lenght dual setup do what i did over the axle out the side like the firebirds and buick GN's im running a full 2.5 inch exhaust x-pipe flowmaster 40s and there run out the side. its going to change a little bit next year going to have to through in a double hump cross member and im going to put in 2 high flow cats so the car doesnt stink so much and im making up custom headers and a putting the engine mounts back in. here are some pics

I was thinking you could use that system but move the muffler back then route the pipes after the muffler to make side exhaust! do you think that would work? just by looking at the pics it looks possible
