I read in a performance thread that you can mill the head down to increase compression. I then read that doing so on a OHC engine such as the 2.3 would mess with the cam timing. Is this so and would it affect it that much that I would have to replace the cam gear with a tuneable one?

for what small amount you are going to mill,it should not affect the timing....but a tuneable cam gear is a good part to install so as to get that timing dead on.

is that the gear that has the four screws in it. and you can loosen the screws and turn the outer part without messing with the cam?

I think having the head machined is a good idea.

It would be a decent boost in compression and could be accented better by more free flowing air intake and exhaust.

Thats a good reason to do it especially on something that has 87hp stock.
