Default what manual tranny will fit in my 1977 Mustang 302?

i bought a 77 mustang it was torn down for restoration and is missing the tranny i have the bell housing what transmisions will fit in this car i am having troubles finding anything for the mustang ll's thanks for any help tim

The only transmission that is an absolute bolt-in is the RAD4 4-spd transmission.

T5 transmissions from later Mustangs can be made to fit with a little work.

Mustang II Network - T5 Transmission Swap <--- Nice write-up on a T5 swap.

Other options include earlier Ford top-loader transmissions, I've heard of a few people doing them, but haven't seen a write-up on it or good pictures.

1976 Ford Mustang II Ghia: 302 with a 600cfm Edelbrock carb, Edelbrock Performer 289 intake, Dynomax Blackjack headers, 2.5" exhaust with Flowmaster Super 44s. RJS 11-gallon fuel cell, C4 tranny, chrome 16" pony wheels, fuzzy dice, brown vinyl half-top, and painted in the tackiest color ever (harvest gold, that's why I call it "The Goldenrod").

Also have a 2003 Dodge Ram (lightly modded daily driver/tow rig/office/dining room/home away from home/workshop... I call it "The Big Blue Dawg".)

thanks for the info are all the t-5 transmissions the same i see some of them are in camaros i will probally do the swap it sounds like the t5 holds up better thanks again tim

so corect me if i am wrong if i use my 77 302 and a t-5 tranny i can use my original clutch,bellhousing and flywheel let me know if that sounds right thanks tim

Yeah, the guy who wrote that article used the originall MII bell, clutch, flywheel...

He had to have some modifications made to the tranny and make a few to the car though, not to mention the pilot bearing and driveshaft.


It's a lot of work... I'm just glad my car has a C4... reliable, fits right, and I can leave my left foot resting on the floorboard so I don't have to drive with my left knee crammed between the armrest and steering wheel (these little IIs don't have enough legroom for a big fella like me with a stickshift... part of the reason I sold my '74 and bought my '76.
