Default 1977 Mustang fastback gas tank leak... bad.

So I was driving home from the gas station with a full tank of gas, first time I've filled in 4 months due to price and how often I drive the car. I get two blocks and smell the gas at a stop sign.

I had leaked almost half the tank in two blocks.

The side filler (main), the vapor line on top, sending unit hose and seal, all blown out.

I guess the biggest questions are:
What should I use to seal the large side filler (steel pipe to steel tank) leak, and for the vapor line on top. And, what other cars would have the same gasket size as the sending unit, that are available.
My sending unit sensor is already bad to make this more depressing.
Should I just chop it and drop in a more available model and replace the whole thing with something like the 1966 model? (I know I would have to chop the trunk pan and do some major mods for this but that was more of an example)

Have you thought about the possibility of getting a tank at a junkyard? 77-78 Mustang, and (of you can believe it) 77-80 Pinto have the same tank. I work at a salvage yard, and could give you a couple possibilities close to you. Joey

Forget trying to modify your car to accept the wrong gas tank-that makes little sense. Unfortunately, no one makes a gas tank OR sending unit for any of the mustang iis so you'll have to fix(weld in new metal, after thoroughly cleaning it) your old one or buy a good used one at the junkyard. You can fix a beat sending unit fairly easily and instructions are easily found doing a web search. The gas tanks from 1977-78 mustang ii and 1977 up pinto are the same. Older 1974-76 mustang ii tanks are different. The sending unit is different from the pinto unless your car and the donor pinto are both 4 cyl. cars. I'm going to assume you have a v6 or v8 in your car which means you need a v6 or v8 mustang ii donor car to get the right sender.

The filler tube slides into a rubber grommet in the side of the tank. The grommet is available at the dealer and after market-about $5.

This is a pretty common problem with Mustang IIs and fox-body Mustangs (less so with the foxes, but it happens more with age) due to similar (but not interchangeable) tank designs. The fixes are the same, and the parts are even really similar. Just track down which seals are leaking and replace them. Also check your reserve tank (if your II has one) for leaks, as well as it's vent valve seal.

Also, make sure and use the right parts for the right year... I thought I could use the good parts off of my '74 to fix my '76, that was a pretty big mistake, as the first time I filled the tank it leaked about 3 gallons out!

IIs are ultra rare anymore, especially in junkyards. I'm actually changing over to a fuel cell at some point so that I'll be able to get new parts for it if/when I need them.

is the tank itself leaking or the grommet?

My tank had a few holes in it(pin holes mostly) i used some water weld made by JB weld (soaked a small peice in fuel for a week, just to make sure it would stand up) I reckon you could use that and some interior sealer to get a little more life out of your tank.
Hopefully when i get a little bit of cash together ill take a fiberglass molding off of mine and make a replacement......
