For those who have problems with the tach on the II stangs like me I recently give up on trying to make the original tach to work. so I decided to buy a new aftermark tach, I buy a VDO 3 3/8" tach from amazon an it fits perfectly into the gauges just did a few changes to the plastic module to fit it in, no major change just a few cuts.
Later today I'll post some pics of the new tach on the gauges

I have almost the same problem with my Speedo, it doesn't like to register till your doing about 30. Wonder where I can find a cable.

My tach comes with the configuration for 4, 6, 8 cylinders. my engine is 4L, and the only way to make it works fine (because I use the configuration for 4 cyl.) was change the config to 6L and works perfect, I now that sound weird, but that's how I made it works. it marks the proper RPM.
you can try changing the conf, on yours to check...
