Default 1983 crown victoria AOD into a 1977 Mustang cobra with a 302

anyone try this yet?

as stated its a 1983 Aod, as far as i can tell it will fit but will need an adaptor to fit the crossmember (its got an extra 4 inches of transmission on it). i hate to see a fresh rebuild go to waste(it was a PITA to do let me tell ya).

The c4 in a mustang ii needed a special bellhousing to make it work. The AOD is a bigger trans and you think it will fit? I don't know, it sounds like you'll be doing quite a bit of cutting, fabricating and modifying to get it to work. Good luck though.

its looking like it'll fit, but Im waiting until the next semester of college(engine rebuild) to do serious fitting. just on a floor jack it fit up into the tunnel and measured out ok.

I don't mean to be a spoil sport or tell you otherwise but why a AOD? Known only for there great potential to break under pressure. The only good thing would be the overdrive but if your looking for strength I would build a C4 or put a C6 in. Just saying.

i need the mileage mostly, I rebuilt it in automatic trans class(college of eastern utah) and replace a few of the problem areas. i doubt im gonna be able to get enough money together to build an engine much above 250 and the aod stock is rated for 300.

eventually i will be buildign a heavy duty C4 or C6, but right now that dirty word is keeping me from affording it.....money....

The aod has overdrive, but draws similar power as the C6, which is a power hog. If fuel mileage is what you're after, just install some taller gears.
You *can* install the aod, but if I recall, it has no vac modulator, and its shift points are controlled via a cable, which must be calibrated correctly with the throttle linkage. I've had a full-size passenger car bellhousing in my II before, headers would be a problem, but with the stock II exhaust manifolds, the bigger bell fits ok. I'd imagine that using the stock manifolds would also allow you to install the aod. Check the lengths, you might have to move the trans mount back and have the driveshaft shortened some. You would also need a different shifter and/or linkage/cable for the extra gear.

It's not an easy swap. As I said, just change the gears.

The AOD swap can be done, but it brings up all sorts of difficulties in a II.

Gotta use an older AOD (mid 80s or earlier) that wasn't computer controlled, have to either find and buy or fabricate a way for the kickdown to mount to your carburetor, have to have the kickdown adjusted by a tranny shop (AODs are EXTREMELY fluid-pressure sensitive, having that cable the slightest bit out of adjustment will grenade that tranny in minutes, we're talking less than 1/4 of and inch.) you'll have to fabricate a tranny crossmember to fit it in there, and the driveshaft will have to be shortened.

If that's the road you really want to go, then by all means go for it, but by the time you buy all stuff for the modifications to make that AOD fit you could buy the II-specific bellhousing and torque converter, and track down and rebuild a C4 to go in there.

My car is keeping its C4 until it gives up... then I'll either rebuild it, swap in a T5, or throw a GM Powerglide with an aftermarket bellhousing.

I have the original C4 still. At this point i Barly have enough to finish the engine and have yet to finish re-assembling the valve body(the highschool class at my college decided to throw stuff around and knocked a stack of cheap tupperware over which spilled my carfully sorted valves all over the table....i was thrilled....).

lokar makes most of the shift linkage parts i need if i decide to go that route.

I did a 74 II when I was 16....back in the 80's. I put a 302 in it and a standard C4 and it just fit. The AOD has a bigger bellhousing and transmission body so you might need to employ a 5 lb. sledge to provide the necessary clearance.

Remember that your engine / transmission is going to rotate a bit about it's axis due to engine torque so when you are making space in the tranny tunnel take that into account.

Also, you are right about Lokar making the cable you need to make the TV connection to a carburator.

The transmission crossmember could be fabricated pretty easily if you have a friend with a welder and a little fabrication experience.

One other thing to look out for is the unbalance weight on the flexplate. Early 302 was 28 oz and later 302/5.0 were 50 oz. so make sure your flexplate and harmonic damper match or you will have an engine vibration that can cause crank failure.

Hi Guys I have being insterested in this swap too , it will take several skills to getting this done, I have being loking for information and searching for it, it seems it is possible but it will take time and money to complete the Job .

It pays do it as you will keep the same thoughness and durability as the C4 and the AOD are very similar with the advantage of the improvement on gas mileage due to the OD . I think when I complete burning my C4 i will go by this way.

If someone its interested take a look to this thread :

AOD installed! - Mustang Forums at StangNet

This guy its a serious builder and had perform this neat and nicely. I do not have experience doing the finall TV cable settings, I thik I will need more help on this issue, any comment or tip its welcome.
