Default 78 II W/302 Getting too hot?

hey all,
my 78, with a 302. My problem, i drive it home, about 20 minutes on the highway going 100km/h and by the time i get home, it wont start again, it struggles, but eventually starts...but it is really annoying, especially if i need to stop to get gas somewhere, then im stuck there for a bit. I just changed the thermostat & rad cap. something a guy at work was saying was that the position of the starter is bad, and it gets too hot down there, and to fabricate a shroud or something.... anyone else ever had this concern, and if so how did you fix. thanks all

When it fails to start - is the engine actually turning over like it should (cranking over)? If so, assuming you have a carb it might be vapor lock. Ive not had that problem, but I have heard a carb space may help a bit.

The starter getting too hot thing is very common on GM vehicles with headers. If the car is NOT cranking (turning) over when the key is in the crank than it might be your problem, but I doubt it. Maybe some others will chime in.

good luck!

yeah it cranks over, but it just doesn't seem to start right away, it takes quite some time for it to start. and even after leaving it for an hour it still doesn't start, it needs a good amount of time before itl start...its really realyl annoying.

so after reading through a bunch of different forums on this site, i found a guy that has a 67...i believe it was a 67 with the 302, and he was having the same problem. and it was chopped up to vapour lock. when hot tries to start, and just takes a while, and starts to crank slower over time... iether way, i have seen a bunch of things about putting spacers between the carb to help with this, but is there anything else, that may be obvious as to what is casing the vapour lock....i dunno, it just gets on my nerves, its been alright tho this whol weekend, takes a little longer to start, but still starts on the first try.
