Question Cpls Project car needs HELP!!!

Hello everyone, ok to start with, we have just got our 76 Ghia to our house and sitting in my driveway, this car has been a 10 year or more dream project of mine and now my new wife has joined the dream, ok now to the car....76 Ghia originaly with a 4 cyl 4 speed, being modified to a 2.8 hopefully with a 5 speed (cant remember if the tranny in it is 4 or 5 but the input shaft is too long) what we need help with is finding a 5 speed tranny that will bolt in with out any modifications ...(if one exsists) if not i was told that i can cut the input shaft of the tranny to fit and all will be right with the world...im wondering if im about to put my self thru too much work, also as far as the look of the car should we put the vinal back on the rear end of the roof or fill the blemishes with puddy and go from there? any help would be greatfully appriciated, thank you!

The 2.8 or any II for that matter did not come with a 5 speed. Cutting the input shaft can be done but it has grooves in it, it's not just a peice of metal. I've never looked for a tranny for a II so rarity is lost to me. Would it work with existing pedals probably not. I really don't know where to go with this. We need to know what your capable of money wise and mechanic wise.

The cutting could work but you would have to do a lot of measuring, then have the input shaft removed from the transmission and take it to a machine shop. Not only would you have to cut the input shaft but you would have to have a new pilot bushing area machined back onto the shaft. Then make sure the splines aren’t to short after the cut. You would be better off machining down the shoulder then machining the pilot area down on a lath. Im not sure if you could get a spacer for between bell housing and block. I guess all this depends on how far off you are.
