Default Lowering the Mustang II

I'm considering lowering my '77 Mustang II 1"-2". When fitted with larger wheels and rubber, they have a very high stance and the lack of a rear valence makes it look even worse. I was thinking of using drop spindles in the front and spacers on the rear leafs. It looks like a mini tub will be a must have in the rear wheel well however.

Has anyone done this? Pics?

Hello

I used the stainless steel brake kit, it had 2” drop spindle ,15” rotors, 5 lug conversion and two piston calipers. This is on a full out drag car so I also cut the front springs a little but the kit went on with no problems. I have some pic on other posts you can look at. I’m not sure about the back, I have a ladder bar set up but what you said sounds correct. Good luck and keep us posted

Great looking "II" Blue Max. A friend of mine used to have a 494" Pro Gas Mustang II that he ran for a number of years. These days, he plays with a sano '04 Mustang Cobra on the street. My "II" only has 10K original miles on it and has been in my Mom's garage since 1978! There is no rust anywhere!!!

I'm coverting the old 302 to a roller cam setup with AFR 165 heads and am still gathering all of the pieces I need to begin. I have a 2006 GT and the "II" looks like it's on stilts next to it.

Why AFR and not TrickFlow, do you have the AFRs already?
AFR is a good head but I like TrickFlows better.

I like the Trick Flows too. If I were building an engine from a bare block on up, I would likely go with the Trick Flows. My decision to go with the AFR's was primarily based on the fact that I am bolting them onto a stock shortblock and wanted the stock valve train geometry. This car is not going to be raced. It's just a street cruiser.

How much lift and lobe sep. does your cam have?
As long as your not over .540 lift you should be fine with stock pistons. The valve geometry is one thing that makes the heads so good, plus you can grow into your heads later if you want to. Not a big deal, just like talking car stuff.

The cam is an E303 and that puts it just under .500" lift. Yes, the Trick Flows are good. I ran their A460's with a TFS tunnel ram on my old drag boat. I actually had the Smith bros. port them. It's a toss up on the small block between the two however, the CNC finished AFR 165's are a very nice head for a mild 302. Wish I could find a set of Blackjack headers! This car will never be a pro-street candidate with an 8" rear end and the stock RAD-4 tranny. I just want it to hold it's own against those "real Mustangs" on the street. My money will be spent on a blower for the '06 GT.

Hey, I would like to see your "II". It looks awesome! You are just on the other end of RT 62 from me.

Thanks, but don’t let the pics fool ya, up close it’s a race car. Sounds like we could talk TrickFlow and AFR all day, the one common denominator is they are both great heads!!
Are you going with the competition package or the street head?

Summit Racing is have a Mustang show Aug 2, from what I understand a lot of the II guys will be up there and we will all be parked together. If you II is on the road you should bring it up or bring up the 06.

Hooker and Hedman both have headers for the II but $$$. I have a set of Blackjacks on mine but they are way to small for me, I am making a set of fenderwell headers this winter, maybe we will work something out.

Yes. I was just at Summit yesterday and saw the advertisement. The "II" won't be back on the road until next year. I'm thinking of coming to the show, however.

The competition package is probably not worth the $$$ in my application given the conservative cam specs of the E303. AFR claims 12-13 HP, but I would imagine this is when paired with a more aggressive cam and induction. I'm just running a Stealth. The TFS CNC's are pretty good looking heads too. I looked at them at Summit.

Yes. I'll buy your Blackjacks. I'm not nuts about the Hedmans and the Hookers are very expensive (and I'm not talking about the ones on the street corner).

You can get the TFS 170 as cast head and it flows better than the AFR cnc port, plus the valve train is better quality. With the Trickflow heads and an E303 cam you should pick up around 50-60 hp.

When I pull them off I'll let you know, they are ceramic coated also you can check them out it the show when you come up.

OK, I think stupid is a little harsh. If you lower it you will have a car that will handle the corners better. It will stop better than a car lifted 5 inches in the back and it flat out looks good. I don’t see any real reason to raise it that high in the back other than tire fitment or personal preference. In any case I would not say you are stupid if you like that look.

I made my own blocks for the rear, see pics in my album. I have 2" spindles. I don't think you want to go lower than I am. I scrape over speed bumps in the grocery store parking lot. Handles great, I have 1" sway bar in front and 3/4" sway bar in back. Some people like lowered cars some like raised cars. I like both. I have a VW bug with 18" of ground clearance and can bonzai big dips at 50 mph when I get tired of crawling through them in the Mustang. I wouldn't tell some one their car or idea is stupid even if I thought it was. It's called character.
