Default 1974 Mustang II

I have a 1974 Mustang 2 that hopefully soon i can get a new motor and transmission. It is currently a V6 but i want to eventually put a V8 into it. If anyone has any suggestions on what motor and/or transmission to put into it, it would be appreciated. Low budget

I saw a Mustang 2 in Muscle Mustangs and he had a 351. I would say either go with that or a hopped up 302. As for a tranny either a T-5 or a C6.

Default Lots of modifacation

In 75' the Mustang II got a redesign to support a v8. Where as the 74' was only built for a 4 banger or v6. So long story short there are many problems with a v8 swap for 74'. Need new radiator, tranny, rear end, drive shaft. nothing in them cars are rated for a high powers. If your planning on replacing everything, go for it! LOL

Well non of the II's stock was what you would consider "high power" as the v8 only had 135 horses. Most of you imports have more horses then that today BUT it is not a classic. The 1974 is harder but not impossible to put a v8 in. Do a search of the forums there are several post about it. To save all the trouble I would recommend sticking with the 6 rated at 105 hp in the 74. With a little work you can have it up to stock 302 range for the same gen mustang (it's only 30 hp). Another choice would be go the SVO route and take a 2.3 liter 4banger beef up the internals and add a turbo to it. There are a lot of guys in the fox bodies that a running some MAJOR power out of them. Either of them options would be better imo for the 74. One thing you will want to check is the size of your rear end (for some strange reason my 74 came with EVERY options available for that year with the exception of an 8inch) If you have a 6.25 rearend you will definately want to upgrade it before putting to much power to it. Easy way to check that is stick your head under the rear of the car and look at the pumpkin. If you can see bolts from the backside it is a 6.25, if not then it is a 8inch. Well happy wrenching and I hope this helps a lil.

PS IMO 1974 was the BEST looking II made. Just look at pictures from 1974 and then look at 75 and up
