Question fuel gauge issues

On my 78 cobra II i just got, the sending unit wires that come from the tank have been cut, I know that the yellow goes to the gauge and that the black is the ground. I hooked them up and it registers half a tank, even though its about empty. I tested the gauge according to the haynes book and the gauge is good, anyone know what could be wrong?? Im stumped

That was my other thought, yesterday i pulled it out( i was thankful of the location of the sending unit being just about on the side of the tank) And the float is good, and i checked the ohms and its perfect when it registers full and empty, i put the sending unit back and thecked the wires from the unit and it was the same. So im guessing its somewhere in the dash... bummer.
