Default how hard is it to install a new axle assembly

i have a 76 mustang II and i want to replace the 8in axle with a bigger housing and 5 lug while im at it. ive read that the 66 mustangs axles fit pretty closely so what i thought i could try is instead of looking for a aftermarket axle for a mustang II (just as hard as everything else to find... i love MIIs!!) i figured i could get an aftermarket 9 in rear end assembly with 5 lug axles and all out of summitracing.com for a 66 mustang and i could swap it into my MII

does anyone know if this would be possible and how hard would it be to mount a new rear end since i have never tried.

while i was already in there i was thinking about upgradeing the suspension from the rear leaf springs... if you guys could recommend any brands or kits it would be appreciated

The only thing that you might need is an air impact, or electric impact, the bolts are hard to get out , other wise its pretty straight foward, you will be suprised how few bolts hold it in

A high-quality air impact wrench (SnapOn, AirCat, or Bluestreak) and a can of PB Blaster are going to be your BEST friends. The nuts on the U-bolts holding the rear end in are going to have 30+ years of rust and corrosion, you might end up cutting off the bolts with a die grinder and buying new Y-bolts (luckily, parts stores carry a wide assortment and you can buy the ones with the same bend and thickness and cut to fit, I recently did this when replacing the rear-end on my Chevy pickup). Everything else is pretty easy as long as you take notes as you dis-assemble everything and the new rear you buy doesn't give any major fitment hassles.
