Default Have you fit a 9" rear in your Mustang II?

I have a 1975 Mustang II that is being totally customized (it was a four-banger originally). I'm starting with a 450 HP 347 Stroker engine and need a 9" rear to handle it. I'm told that I cannot fit the 9" rear without losing the back seat, which I really don't want (I'd like to keep the back seat so that the kids can enjoy the car with me). Has anyone successfully made this work and if so, how?

Not true, I have a 9 inche lincoln versilles with disc brakes under mine. All I had to do was move the spring perchs over about 1/2 inche. Now if you want to tub it. You would lose your back seats.

Think it would fit with no problem. I bought a Pinto from a guy at work that had a 351, built C-4 and the 9" in it just for parts. I'd have to check on the width but think it's the same width as a '66' Mustang. As mentioned above, have to move the spring perches. Ought to be fun!

Only thing Ive heard about putting a 9" under is that it would need to be shortened.Dont know how much or even if its necessary in your project, but nigel seems to be fairly knowledgeable and I would trust his judgement

The FORD 9 inches come in many lenghts. I pulled mine rear end out. Placed it side by side with the lincoln's and there was less than 1/4 inche in difference. I had 295/50/15's on the rear and they didn't stick outside the wheelwell. Hope that helps.

Thank you! After researching further, I was able to find a 9 inch Lincoln Versilles rear with disc brakes. I'm upgrading to 3.50:1 gears as well. Did you upgrade the springs? Mine are still original and given that I am jumping from a 2.3L, I'm thinking I need to get larger ones... thoughts?

I'm upgrading my springs now but all I'm doing is adding a extra leaf to both side. Mine came with a V6 but I dropped a 351C in it. I went with 4:11 gears, posi, and slotted cross drill rotors. I got them off of ebay for $89.00. You should look into it.

Thumbs up

I was very surprised to find that a 9 inch out of a 10-71 bronco is only a quarter inch wider on each side than the II's rear end. Only thing you have to do is get some custom back spaced wheels, and relocate the spring pearches on the housing. its what i did on mine. and since the bronco was 4 wheel drive, its really easy to find one with a full posi and low gears.

An 8.8 is just as strong-cheaper -easier to find-easier to modify. there are way more 8.8 in fox bodies cougars t-birds explorers-rangers than disc brake versilles. just a thought.
