Default 1974 Mustang-What is best engine/trans

I am looking for a 6 cylinder engine and also transmission. I have a 1974 Mustang, if i can't find that year and make what would be the best 6 cylinder engine/transmission to get? Year, Make and Model if possible thanks. (I am looking in a junk yard)

well go for the good ol' 2.8 liter. I mean, a 1974 only has 30 less horses then the 1975 302. Them 30 horses are not hard to make up and there are performance parts for them (a lil more expensive but not all that bad) such as the offenhuaser intake, headers, changing out the 3speed/4speed for a t5. Also if you don't have it already then swap to an 8 inch rear end, and put a4 barrel carb of your choice (around 350 cfm). and you will have a decent 6.

Please note that the 1974 came with 105 hp after that the horse rating goes down, you can also look at some later broncos II and rangers had the 2.8.....not sure on their ratings though

The 83-85 Ranger/Bronco II and the 86 Aerostar 2.8 is basically the same engine, but you would need to swap out the carb, carb spacer, and distributor to make it compatible with your Mustang II ignition.

If you aren't afraid of wiring splices and a bit of research, then the 2.9 or 4.0 will bolt up as well.

For the transmission, avoid the C3. The C4 or RAD 4 will bolt up.
