The Vacuum system in smog controlled vehicles is pretty important, and it wont run without it
unless you get rid of *most*, not all, the EGR spacer on the intake manifold, the water neck, essentially wherever the vaccum lines plug in that arent needed, which are just smog devices. Get a vacuum diagram. Ive got the 2.8 V6 currently as well, and ive removed some of the vaccum equipment and just put vacuum caps on the ports. And NO you will not pass smog without an EGR valve, fuel evaporative canister ect, pretty much all vacuum operated.....so.....if you did the conversion of no smog, which would be painful b/c the absolute lack of aftermarket parts for the 171

. Anyway, what state are you in? im in california and the emmisions laws are strict but on my cars 30th birthday -jan 1 2006 *yay* ill be running a non smogged V8. But that might or might not be the case with you, in some other states its 25 years. But in short - yes you need them to run and no you wont pass emmisions w/o them. :thumbsup good luck
