Need Help! 1978 Cobra II 4 speed transmission won't go into 2nd gear?

hey i just got a 1978 cobra II with a 4 speed transmission. it wont go into second gear, but all the other gears are fine. but every now and then it will go into second. i have been told it may be a bad synchronizer ring or whatever its called. any info would be great!

90% of the failures with these transmissions occurs in the 2nd gear synchronization section. Generally, it would jam itself into second gear, so a rebuild is needed.

You might wanna send Darrin a member on here a PM. I dont think he checks the board that much and he is a 4.6 guy and mainly deals with 4r70w, the autos found in the 96-04 stangs and knows them like the back of his hand..but he may have some advice as this sounds like a general automatic question. Sorry i cant offer anymore help. Maybe he will have an idea.

Um, there was no 4-spd automatic in the Mustang back then, it was the 4-spd RAD manual, a tough tranny to be sure, but with a weak set of 2nd gear synchros that were it's achillies heel, along with weird ratios.
