first off, after sitting for an exstended period of time, the car will idle (78 mustang II 5.0L) but then when i put it into first it just stops responding, as soon as i start moving, it acts as though its not getting gas, no matter how hard i push down the accelerator. any suggestions on what could be wrong, there was a bunch of crap in the fuel filter, replaced it, and the carb looks pretty clean, so i dont know whats wrong.
secondly, i dont know if anyone has to deal with AIRCARE, like i do here in BC, but it wont pass the Hydrocarbons at Idle part of the test, the allowed amount is around 300, i have about 3000, anyone know how to reduce my hydrocarbons at idle?\
Pull the plugs, and check them. Pull the carb off and clean it out. if it sat for an extended period of time varnish has set up in the bottom and in the jets....nasty nasty.
replace the base gasket under the carb, and look for vacuum leaks. if it won't idle below say 1200rpms then most likely you have a vacuum leak somewhere.
Give up some more info, and you will get a more complete answer.
i should re-fraise that, it hasnt sat for a long period of time, but if i let it sit for a while, say 4hrs it will start, and idle, but it wont drive, and it idles at about 1000rpms, any lower and it sound like its struggeling for air
SO yeah, i've been lookin at my carb, its VERY clean, but if you are looking at it as it sits on the car, the left sprayer is not spraying, anyone have any clue how to unclog it, i cant find my way to it!
I doubt I can help, but whereabouts are you in Burnaby? I'm near Metrotown, and might be able to take a look. If nothing else, I can help keep you motivated and talk II's to stave off the frustration....

lotsa parts and nowhere to work with them...
I would recommend rebuilding the carb as well or replacing it with a 4-bbl I wouldn't go over 600 cfm though unless tou have a bigger bumpstick in mind
ok, so i've cleaned the carb out, its clean and good, fuel filter clean, new spark plugs, new plug wires, and still same problem, it will run for a few seconds, maybe about 10 then die, but if i give it ANY throttle it dies right away....any clues?
oh and also, i got this car used, and there are hoses coming off the carb, 1 plugged with a galf TEE, and another with a bolt, plus 2 other hoses plugged with bolts, i believe that they are coming off the intake manifold, not sure, im really not good with knowing vacume and such
I would just disconnect the vaccum system if you can...my 78 used to be a v6 and the vaccum system always gave me probs...so I just bypassed it...Vaccum diagrams are available on MustangII.net or maybe ebay...but if u can, I'd just bypass it if at all possible....hope it helps!!
