Default Mild Cam Upgrade for 2.3L MustangII

I'm not interested in a turbo right now, but with a bad head gasket, I would like to install a mild cam with new followers. Would a stock intake and carb feed the new cam properly? Is a cam swap a simple bolt in with no adjustments as the Hayne's manual suggests?

Thanks for any advise!

Well a cam swap should be pretty easy with the head off the car. I wouldn't call it a bolt on myself. It's not incredibly hard as long as you have the tools. I would highly recommend a valve spring compressor, also never swap to a higher lift cam without checking the valve spring seat pressures. I know Comp, Crane, Isky and Lunati all make cams for that motor.

I put a slightly better cam in my 2.3 a few years ago. It was Sealed Power part number: CS1156R it has a slightly more noticeable idle, worked well with the stock carb and intake, and moved the powerband from idle-to-4000 up to 1500-5000rpm. I've been pretty happy with it, especially with my free-flowing exhaust (it's all 2.25" pipe, with a glasspack, but that's no restriction to an engine that small!) and later carb and ignition upgrades. The engine runs happy all the way to 6000 rpm, with power starting to drop off right after 5000. If you're looking for a conservative cam to wake your 2.3 up a bit without durability issues it's a pretty good bet. I ordered mine through Advance Auto Parts a few years ago in a complete kit with a cam, lifters, and followers and it ran right around $150.
