Default Stalling at Highway Speeds - newbie question

Hi,

Im kinda new to the Mustang II. I have been trouble shooting this problem for a little while. While cruising at 60mph, the car will occasionally stall. Waiting a few minutes will let me start it up again and keep going. I have completely replaced the ignition system. My last fix - the control box - seemed to fix the problem for a little bit. The exact same problem is happening again. It feels alot like its not getting enough gas (although I realize that if it looses spark momentarily it will feel the same). So I guess my question has two parts. Is it common for the ingnition control box to fail after a few months? Or could this be caused by a failing fuel pump?

Any thoughts, or experiences would help.

Thanks,

Sound like vapor lock? Once the car sits for a couple minutes and cools down the engine will restart. Is your fuel line run anywhere near your exhaust or engine block? It's possible that if the fuel line is too close to the block or exhaust the fuel could boil and turn into a vapor which your fuel pump will not pump? then once the car cools down it turns back into liquid it can be pumped again.

Did you replace the coil? Sometimes the coil will have a bad spot in it and cause no spark to the distributor. What everyone else has said it a possibility too. Keep trying and see which one works.

It also probably wouldn't hurt to replace the fuel filter.

Mine had the same problem, however I inspected the fuel system. I had gum and crap in my fuel lines, so I ran a can of seafoam through the tank and its been fine since. It was running out of fuel to the carb at sustained hwy speeds.

Default sounds like fuel...

I think the fuel starvation avenue is the first place I'd go. Fuel filters, pumps, clean fuel tank and lines. Pretty cheap to do all of these if you have the time. Internal ignition stuff can shut down due to heat also. If you are running hotter than normal, things like igniter coils can shut down or malfunction until they cool. I'd still check out the vapor lock...thats most likely.

Is there any kind of heat wrap for fuel lines at all? i think i am having a similar problem, when the car is hot, i can not start it, it cranks, then stops, and a puff of white smoke comes out of teh hood. Problem being i have never stopped and actually had someone crank it so i could see where the smoke is coming from, possibly the vapour instead of gas, or possibly starter being too hot. I have heard a starter can do that if its getting too hot, iether way, ive tested my starter and it seems good, but i never get a chance to test it hot.

Regardless, i am going to test it hot one day to see if it is drawing too much, and if not, awesome im still gonna heat wrap it. But i would also like to heat wrap the fuel lines, just for added assurance.

Car runs great, just after it heats up i cant start it again for at least 10 minutes or so... Very Embarrasing situation hahaha

I am so tired of hearing all the fixs and $$$ wasted on guesses. I along with a few other people have had the same problem, my favorite question is do you have a fuel line close to exhaust. Ha Ha they all had the fuel line running in the same place, along the frame rail on the drivers side yet for years Mustang II's ran fine on the roads even in hotter climates out west. So lets see, hmmmmm? could it be that the fuel systems after 30 + years are just breaking down. Yup, drop the tank, clean it out or have it professionally done, replace or rebuild sending pickup, chances are it's filled with gum and corroded, as well as the screen filter being shot. Change all rubber fuel and venting hoses and lines. Start car and end of problem. Whats happening is not uncommon in older cars but after throwing all new parts on, most people neglect the fuel system as I did. The vapor lock is not being caused by heat although it does aggravate the symptoms, it's being caused by vacuum building up in the tank and sucking against the fuel flow, leaning the mixture due to insufficient flow causing additional heat buildup. Or you can do as I did and replace your carb, fuel filter, 3 mechanical fuel pumps including a Holley High performance one, radiator, add a big cowl induction scoop on hood to relieve heat, full tune up etc. etc. $$$$$ and wind up with the same problem, all I had to do was drop the tank and replace the lines and hoses
...Problem Solved...

I had the same problem. Mine was the electric fuel pump. Went with a Holley and haven't had the problem since.

Thumbs up

STANG II!!!

That makes a lot of sense, i have owned my II for about 2 years now, and i have never dropped and cleaned the tank, etc. Furthermore, who knows the last time it was dropped and cleaned, IF EVER.

I think that should definately be my first plan of attack, as well, i have been trying to figure out a repair for my leaking sunroof, trying to do everything i can think of, and i finally came to the point on saying screw it.

Im just gonna spend the money, and buy a new weatherstripping kit, i have wasted too much time for no results at all.

SO i agree with you, wasting time, money etc. Why not due the obvious things first.

Thank you STANG II for knocking a little sense into me.

Peace bud.
