Default Easy fix for hatchback rattles

I opened my hatch yesterday to find that the rubber bumber on the right side of the hatch gave up the ghost. I have never been satisfied that the bumbers weren't adjustable. I went to the local Pick-a-part and grabbed a hand full of different bumpers. The newer cars predominantly use rubber bumpers with large screw threads cut into them. I like those because they don't get loose and get out of adjustment. I studied the holes and figured I could make them. Here's what I did. I used my unibit to drill the holes out to 1/2". I then grabbed my Dremel and cut a slot to make it look like a light bulb (see pictures). I then used a brake spoon (could be a screw driver but the right angle gave me more leverage) and twisted it to make the thread opening. Then just screwed the adjuster in and presto new adjustable bumpers. No more rattle. Cost about $1 and took 20 minutes.

Cool deal. I'm sure someone else can use such a trick to solve an annoying rattle.

Nice work, made thread a sticky so it'll be up top and easy to find for people hunting a fix for this common issue!

Since we're talking about noises in the hatchback area, I have the louvers on rear window and those were really annoying going over bumps. I fixed the majority of the noise by just taking a couple feet of black fuel hose and cutting a slit in it and pushing it onto the two center rails of the louvers so they don't smack into the window anymore. Since it is fuel hose you can't see it at all because the louvers are black too, it was a cheap fix.

that's a great idea, on my stang I made the rear spoiler at the end of the door hatch and becomes heavier now the door makes a lot of noise, this will help a lot, thanks again for the tip

One of reasons why the hatch rattles is because the area where the bumper makes contact with the rear quarter panel (by the taillight) becomes pushed in over time and even after installing new bumpers there is a small gap....Up to around 1/8". The way to fix it is to remove the rear hatch panel and cover and use a dead blow hammer to pound it upward back in position. I did this on my car and it has worked great ever since. I can add a picture if interested.
