Default 1977 Mustang 302 UPDATE: Vacuum Issues - Graphic attached!!

Hi Everyone -

I made a diagram of my current (1977 302) Vacuum hook up. If you feel like it, take a look and let know if you see any solutions.

Keep in mind that when I bought the car it drove great. I took off the carb and the gas tank and am just now getting it running. On my first test drive after reinstalling the carb it died one too many times and shifts like doo doo.

I have a couple issues:

1. Missing heater valve and don't see any vacuum sources for it.

2. Tranny vacuum line is unhooked (!). On my recent test drive it shifted like doo doo. When I test drove it prior to purchase it shifted fine (??). You'll notice a couple caps on what I call the Main Vacuum tree - they have been there since before purchase.

3. It is possible I disconnected the tranny hose when taking the carb out - I have no recollection of that or any notes. It is possible I put the yellow hose on the wrong tree. It may be that the yellow hose goes to the small tree and the tranny hose goes to the

4. There is an uncapped fitting on what I call the secondary vacuum tree. It has two fittings, one has a green hose which goes to the EGR. Second fitting uncapped.

5. The stock air filter assembly was taken off by the PO and replaced with a typical aftermarket open element one (Ford Racing). Does anyone know where that would hook up (either the sm or the large tree)

Any help/comments/etc is appreciated. I need to adjust the carb but want to make sure all the vacuum stuff is correct.

MANY, MANY, MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

Not sure if this makes a difference but on mine the vacuum advance from the distributer goes to the carb base on the passenger side just behind the coil.

Thanks Stang II! That certainly ads another piece to the puzzle. I would be very grateful if you would take a picture of the vacuum fittings/set-up behind the carb.

As an update, I connected the trannt hose to the main tree and rerouted the carb vacuum (yellow-striped hose) to the fitting on the small vacuum tree. What is that thing? I took it for a test run and it shifted great. A little hesitation on hard acceleration, but I have yet to adjust the timing after having the carb rebuilt by Pony Carbs (good guys).

I also, minutes ago, found an uncapped fitting on the base of the carb -- in the front -- where the stock air filter assembly hose (red striped) went. The PO sent me an older photo of the engine and I tracked that down.

If you look at that photo, you see the distributor advance hose snakes from the driver's side. Hmmmm.

If you have a sec and can snap some more pics, you'd be a ROCK STAR.

Here is how it all is now.

I'm googling 'ported vacuum' as I have been informed that the advance goes to ported vac and not manifold. I'm assuming this is what Stang II is referring to. What happens then is I'm left with a yellow-striped hose with nowhere to go.

Thanks
CL
