Back then? I'm sure they did not have the same tracking methods? So file for a lost title and get a new one with the bill of sale. We have come along way in the great department of motor vehicles LOL

Back then in the early 70s there was no such thing as a computer....So tracking vin numbers was a huge task. Someone mentioned that the original owner may of been paid by his insurance company. If that is true then the insurance company owns the car and not the original owner. Judy needs to ask this fellow if in fact he got an insurance payment. If he did then she could probably pay the insurance company what they paid the policy owner and they might release the auto to her. I would also go after the used car lot or try to track down the owners of the lot. There has got to be some recourse from them if they can be found. This story can go on for a long time.....GA

An excellent point. If he got paid for the car it's not his anymore. It belongs to the insurance company. He can't accept a settlement from the insurance company and then get the car back as well....even if the settlement was 38 years ago.
Seems to me she brought it on herself, What did she think would happen? If you call the police and insist that you bought a stolen car 38 years ago, nothing good can come of that.
After spending all that time and money I would rather watch it burn to the ground than just hand it to over or go park it in compton with the keys in the ignition and call gramps to come get his car quick.
The original owner may have been paid by his insurance company. If that is true then the insurance company owns the car and not the original owner.
Thanks for bringing back painful memories. My first brand new car was a '69 SS396 375hp 4spd Chevelle. It was stolen in 1975 and I used the insurance money to order a '76 Limited Edition Firebird Trans Am. Two years later I got a phone call at home from the police asking if I was the one who had his '69 SS396 stolen. It didn't occur to me that my insurance company had paid me and it would belong to them if it was recovered. Hope swelled inside me as I quickly replied "yes". Then hope was dashed, as they asked me if my car had ever been recovered. The police were only looking to contact victims in order to close old files.

Just to clear things up. Judy came to our Mustang club of San Diego last night and gave us the scoop, it seems that the car has 2 vins, one the door and one one on the fender, it seems that the door was changed before she(her dad) bought it over the years the dmv etc. said her title was legit, now they say it isn't. She still has the car, the original owner is coming down this sat. to look at it.
They can't find any insurance pay off, probably was not insured.
Eugene and his wife came down this morning. I got it out of my garage and he got in and drove it. We talked and he told me I could buy it from him for $38.00. One dollar for each year I had it. Of course I did this and he signed all the paperwork. Yipee......................................!!!!
Now to finish up on what I had originally said on my introduction. Whew...............
