What a night last night. Tornados rolled through Chapman and Manhattan Kansas around 11pm and we got hit hard.
They haven't determined the strength of the tornado yet but it was a quarter mile wide and probably an F2 or small F3 as it ran through the area. Chapman is about 80% destroyed and 1 person died.
In Manhattan we lost about 30 homes and had major business damage and damage on the KSU campus. The attached pics show what used to be a big hardware store, our Midas and a car dealership that I pass on the way to work every morning. These are all a quarter of a mile from my home. The tornado lifted a bit and then settled on campus where an estimated 20 million in damages occurred. KSU is just east of us about 2 blocks. We didn't sustain any damage at our home thankfully!
If the link works, it shows the view from a camera that's mounted on Anderson Hall on the KSU campus. It is facing due West and when the lightning flashes you can see the tornado as it's backlit. Our house is located just to the right of where the tornado is. At the end of the clip you can see debris start to fly right before the camera goes dead as the tornado hits it.
The weather sucks this year! We had tornado warnings just last Thursday evening right after the big hail storm hit. Two of our vehicles were damaged in that hail (refer to previous thread) but insurance is taking care of us.
Take care all!

It's almost the middle of June! Tornado season should be over.
We've had them in the state (Pitcher, OK was leveled) recently too but fortunately nothing has hit close to home.
Glad to hear y'all are ok.
I just have 2 things to say.... first I'm glad you and Mrs. Snack are ok. Second...AZ looks pretty good right now huh?
It sure does! This is just nuts this year. Maybe we'll show up in AZ with a U-Haul towed behind us.

You guys have had it bad, too! Season almost over... not for us! We're over-achievers in Kansas!

Here some more pics from this morning that show the damage to the Miller Park Neighborhood. 30 homes were leveled here only producing minor injuries. We're about a mile from this area. Scary!
The rest of the pics are some of the damage on the KSU campus on the other side of us about 2 blocks away.

Here is a link to a story on AOL about some of the tornadoes in your area. The article is mainly about a Boy Scout camp that was destroyed near Blencoe, Iowa. Sadly, four Scouts were killed - but many of the others are being praised for the way they reacted in helping those among their fellows who were injured, trapped, etc. The story does, however, mention Chapman and Manhattan, along with other parts of Kansas that were damaged by what is referred to as a 'line of tornadoes.'
I am glad to hear you guys are ok.We don't have tornados in Az.That would be scary to watch head towards you and eerie to see the aftermath as you walk out the door.

The smart folks aren't watching it "head towards" them. They're in the tornado shelter in the garage floor!!
Thankfully we haven't had to go into ours yet in the three plus years we've lived in this house. You KNOW what's gonna happen now, right?!
And if we do have to go into it, my husband has to back his 1980 Corvette out of the garage so we CAN get into it! He says he'll do it but I have my concerns!
i tell you what i give it up to yall man we get hurricanes down here and a very very occasional tornado "usually comes with the hurricane" i can deal with the hurricanes we get like 5 to 10 days warning where yall have 5 to 10 min thats crazy i could never sleep lol id have to just put my bed in the shelter but boy i know the hunting up there is unreal that would be the only reason i move there because i love to hunt
Man Snack, you have been having a rough year so far between tornadoes, hailstorms, and Carbon Monoxide. I hope the rest of this year gets better for you and finally start having some breaks go your way.
